This one went under the radar because the media is dwelling on the killings in California.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) A city spokeswoman says two people have been shot and eight people are in custody and being questioned after a series of three shootings on Clearwater Beach in Florida.
Joelle Castelli says in an email that the shootings Monday arose from fights between groups of people and do not appear to be random. She says the first shots were fired outside the Hyatt Regency. She said at a news conference that someone fired shots from the hotel parking garage.
She says one wounded person has been taken to a nearby Tampa Bay hospital and the other who was shot in the hand left the scene.
She says access to the beach had been cut off for a time but had reopened.

The United States has become one big killing field, and the mentality remains that we need more guns! How many more? Tell me how many more have to suffer so that the fucking gun nuts can continue to use people as target practice and deprive others of their rights?
Yes people, it is about rights, the right to live over the right for "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Where does it say anything about the right to take others right to life, when doing so, isn't that also depriving the right to the second amendment as well?

(101,295 posts)2 people shot, but neither killed (one in the hand, and apparently preferred not to go to hospital with it) is not something that normally gets big coverage outside the community it happens in. As people have pointed out, the US averages about 30 firearm homicides a day, so it's the typical deaths that would mean this gets little coverage.

(3,864 posts)These don't get as much news a cases like Santa Barbara. Because in the latter case it could happen to anyone - like the shooter in the theatre, it could happen to US.
In the former, we figure that would never happen to us, bec. we don't hang out with people like that.

(31,493 posts)How about deaths from texting? ...which kill more people than drunk drivers. Sure wacko gun user news is relevant but IMO DU should be balanced with news of other unnecessary deaths. I'm still more worried about the asshole driving next to me than any terrorist or wacko gun user.

(7,408 posts)It flew under the radar because it's black gang violence, this kind of stuff happens regularly around several areas of Florida. It wouldn't have made national news even without a mass shooting in the headlines.
I'm near Jacksonville, there are murders almost every week. It barely grabs peoples' attention on the local level because it's mainly limited to a certain area of town and demographic. I've actually heard people say "Oh that's just the Northwest side".
Things worse than this happen every week in Chicago, it really doesn't get much attention on the national level.
If several white kids got shot at the beach it would be a much bigger story around here.
