Glenn Greenwald praises Fox News, slams MSNBC

Greenwald Praises Megyn’s ‘Tough’ Cheney Questions; Wonders if MSNBC Would Do Same to Dems
by Andrew Kirell | 12:20 pm, June 19th, 2014

Glenn Greenwald has a question: If even Fox News can give an occasional tough grilling to someone like former Vice President Dick Cheney, can MSNBC do the same to prominent Democrats currently in office?

After seeing Megyn Kelly‘s tough line of questioning for Cheney on Wednesday night, Greenwald tweeted out the question:

Glenn Greenwald ✔ @ggreenwald

On Fox, @megynkelly poses some tough & uncomfortable questions to the Cheneys http://www.politico.com/story/2014/06/dick-cheney-megyn-kelly-fox-interview-108049.html?hp=l2 … - does MSNBC do this to prominent Dems?
7:31 AM - 19 Jun 2014

This isn’t the first time Greenwald has slammed MSNBC as a safe haven for Democratic politicians. More than a year ago, he said about one the network’s particularly well-known shows: “One would find more vibrant political debate in the average conference room of the DNC.”

Kelly didn't call out Cheney's lie (Iraq did not want to give soldiers immunity, many here decry Obama for responsibly offering to keep training forces there).

She also agreed with Liz "he (Obama) wanted out, he wanted out." That's objectively false, as Obama did offer to stay.

In every one of Obama's Iraq forces speeches he always uses the word "responsibly." Obama did that.

If that counts as "tough and uncomfortable" then he should see Assange's Reddit AMA today where he blew past dozens of important questions.

We also need to remember that, when it comes to MSNBC, it was the network that canned Phil Donahue in the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq for no other reason than he was featuring anti-war guests on his show.

I think the current owners have developed the network's "lean forward" kind of liberal news talk shows because they know there is an under-served market for such programming, but they will not allow it to lean too far forward (hence drivel like Morning Joe, for example).

FOX is blatantly right-wing propaganda, MSNBC's evening lineup is definitely left-of-center, but both remain within the parameters of what's sanctioned as acceptable discourse.

Left-wing (as opposed to merely left-of-center) views are rarely, if ever, allowed.

Greenwald on the Bush Admin

I had not abandoned my trust in the Bush administration. Between the president’s performance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the swift removal of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the fact that I wanted the president to succeed, because my loyalty is to my country and he was the leader of my country, I still gave the administration the benefit of the doubt. I believed then that the president was entitled to have his national security judgment deferred to, and to the extent that I was able to develop a definitive view, I accepted his judgment that American security really would be enhanced by the invasion of this sovereign country.

Can the anti-Greenwald crowd just admit that it's because a Democrat is in office that these leaks and Greenwald enrage them so much? Just admit it. I'm actually okay with it and wouldn't criticize it. I just don't understand why nobody can just come out and say it here.

As for the Greenwald quote, remember how popular the war was "back in the day"? I think a lot of people felt the way Greenwald did. I had a twinge of "yay USA!" for a few minutes when I saw the Saddam statue get pulled down. Good sense caught up to me quickly, though, as I knew it was just propaganda.

I suspect if Bush were president when Greenwald (and Snowden) did what they did, many of the same people who are beating up on them so incessantly would be just as incessant in their praise of them.

Grenwald was off the mark on this observation about Fox and MSNBC. Big deal. His praise of Kelly's softball "hard questions" to Cheney is being echoed by many here.
