(10,500 posts)I don't know what a person does to get themselves "ignored." And I am not sure how it works for the ignorer--do you not see their posts? What about the posts of the people replying to them?
cbayer
(146,218 posts)there is that.
You can put people on two levels. One just blocks mail from them and the other is a "full ignore".
Full ignore hides every post from that member and all responses below any post they make. You also don't see anything listed in the "my posts" tab, so you generally don't even know when they have responded to you.
Some people can just be ignored without using the ignore feature, but with others it is more difficult. Some people are truly "master baiters", if you know what I mean.

(65,227 posts)hanging out on smirkingchimp.com when someone there posted an excerpt from an excellent long post by H20Man. I followed the link to DU to read the rest of it, and I have been here ever since.
Shortly before that, the owner of The Smirking Chimp website had gone all autocratic and started banning a bunch of longtime members whose posts I particularly enjoyed reading (even those who were regular and generous contributors to his fund drives!). I was especially appalled by the way he ditched one member, a vet (an Australian transplant to the US, I think) who used the name desertrat. When I emailed desertrat to let him know how sorry I was to lose the opportunity to read his informative and well-written posts, he suggested that I might look around at some of the other liberal websites. He had moved on to The Daily Kos and The Booman Tribune, and I tried them out for a short while, but never felt quite at home on either site.
At about the same time, The Smirking Chimp website underwent a major redesign. Before that redesign, I had considered The Smirking Chimp to be the most attractive and easy to use of all the liberal websites I had seen. I could never quite handle the The Daily Kos, which I found ugly and difficult to navigate. Most of the other sites I checked out also seemed ugly and inconvenient to navigate and post on.
Frankly, I found DU's look pretty ugly, as well, but it was quite easy to navigate and post on, and I was impressed by the quality of the content--both the news articles provide by members and the level of the discussions. Kephra was still alive then, and those of you who were around back then will remember that he spent huge amounts of time collecting important and useful news articles and posting them here on DU. What a treasure he was--and I wish I had had a chance to meet him, too.
I admired the writing of several other members who posted regularly back then but who do not any longer. Sad to say, some have died, but many have just moved on to other venues--or maybe just to real life. I miss their posts, too.
Anyway, once I came here, I stopped posting on The Smirking Chimp. It had become too difficult to navigate and too inconvenient to follow threads on. Also, the owner had decided that no new threads on any topic could be started as long as one thread had already been started on that topic. Sure, that prevented the silly proliferation of duplicate threads on the same topic, but it also ignored the fact that a single general topic might have several different angles that deserved to be discussed in their own threads.
Those omnibus discussion threads soon became so long that they took forever to load, and it was impossible to plow through the endless posts on a thread to identify and participate in a discussion on any particular aspect of the general topic.
_________
It seems that H20Man does not post as often as he used to, but back then I would see his long, interesting posts several times a week, and I always enjoyed reading them.
There are other members her that I am sure I would enjoy meeting (like MrScorpio, for example), but if I had to choose just one, H20Man would be that one.

Buffalo is not a very interesting city, just another dying blue collar city surrounded by now closed factories, but the neighbors really are as good as they say. People tend to get along quite well and help each other out. When you get stuck in the snow here, people actualy come to help shovel/push you out, even complete strangers (the snow thing happens a lot).
MannyGoldstein
(34,589 posts)Since I grew up in NYC, "upstate" is anything north of Putnam County.
People are unbelievably nice, everything is beautiful, even the awful winters are beautiful in their frozen splendor.

From Massachusetts, Georgia, Washington, New Jersey, Washington D.C., Maryland, California, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, New York, Florida, North Carolina, Maine, Minnesota, Arizona, Texas, Iowa, Canada, England, Australia... and some I'm not even sure where they're living.

(296,846 posts)isn't our own. I remember that from when I lived in San Diego for 15 years back in 70s and 80s.. trying to learn Espanol in order to talk to our friends who didn't know English, yet.
DFW
(54,281 posts)Luckily, they do to me. My wife and I don't even speak English at home, and I work out of a country that borders on something like ten others, so I need every one of the nine languages I have learned, and wish mightily I had learned about twenty more.
Cha
(296,846 posts)speak to people in their own language that we've learned. My son is like that.. picks up other languages pretty good.. accent and all.
DFW
(54,281 posts)Since I don't know the German gestures for "I think you're beautiful, but I'm not going to be obnoxious about it," it was a good thing I had learned some German BEFORE we met!!
We always spoke to our two daughters in our own languages from the very beginning. Not only because we didn't want any one set of grandparents to be at a cruel disadvantage, but also because you're at your most natural in a cradle language, and because we wanted our daughters to be fully bi-lingual by the time they started looking for jobs, which turned out to put them on a fast track toward self-sufficiency some 25 years later.
Your son is his way to being a true world citizen. Tell him he is on the right track to world citizenship. I only speak a few words of languages like Kurdish, Turkish, Japanese, Hungarian, etc., but even that is enough to elicit a smile and a nod of appreciation from people to whom those are their native languages. And as for the ones I do speak, I was just down in Barcelona on Friday, and was reminded yet again, how VERY much people of a formerly oppressed ethnic group (in this case, the Catalans) appreciate it when an outsider learns their language purely because he wants to.

(54,281 posts)I have had the honor of meeting Hissyspit at the 2008 convention, and may have one other as a brief houseguest later on this year or early next year, depending on his travel plans.
Other than that, there a quite a few I get along with here on the board, and would be pleased to run into for an afternoon or evening. Considering my day job, the likelihood of that is just about zero, but never say never.
I feel it in my bones that Cal Peggy's paths and mine will someday cross, and Howard Dean promised me he would introduce me to Alan Grayson and Rachel Maddow. Rachel Maddow took care of that herself when we ran into each other at the tiny airport in Provincetown, Mass., but I doubt I'll see Alan Grayson there, so, Howard is still on the hook for that one. Howard's brother, Jim (of DFA), is stopping by for a day during my US vacation this year. It's not exactly on the beaten paths, but if anyone is in the range of WOMR-FM on Bastille Day...............

I don't think there is anyone from the DU community that I wouldn't have a pleasant time talking with in person. And I'd love to meet up with a large group of DUers at some social-political event.
But my first choice would to have about a dozen DUers here, to hang out by my pond, and have a good sweat lodge ceremony. (81,110 posts)Okay, this is really stupid and I'm embarrassed to admit this - but scanning down the LOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGG list here and seeing that nobody mentioned me actually made me really sad! Hell, I realize this is a thread - on the internet - and that's a little bit of foolishness and weirdness right there! And I shouldn't let it bother me, and I shouldn't get upset, and I should just laugh it off, 'cause it's just the internet. I get that. This just hit me really hard. I took it seriously. And I took it personally. All these other DUers were getting mentioned, many repeatedly, and nobody wanted to meet me. Actually, I probably would want to meet all of them much more than I'd want to meet me, too!
I actually closed the tab on my laptop, which I always keep open on DU, and contemplated posting one of those threads where one announces one is leaving or is taking a break for awhile. Maybe I need to, anyway.
It just really got to me. Maybe I just need to avoid threads like these for awhile, but I saw trumad's first - and I felt really bad about that, and bad for him, and then I got curious, and came over here to check this one out, and - well, there it is.
Thanks, sheshe2. I appreciate this so much! DAMMIT. Still taking it too seriously...

I'm always curious what internet personalities are really like on the other side of the keyboard.
The ones I think I would really enjoy having a live conversation with: Neoma, one_voice, RiffRandell, Behind the Aegis, opiate69, Warren D, SissyK, Catherina, Ruby the Liberal, RainDog, Violet_Crumble, Prism, Drunken Irishman, hifiguy, Aristus, Warpy, polly7.
I'm sure I've left a few out, and will need to edit once the coffee kicks in.

I would love to meet one_voice. That woman already knows and accepts my type of crazy, so I am good.
I'd like to add OKNancy (which may happen at some point), William679, theHandpuppet, meti57b, Jamastiene, Call Me Wesley, Heidi, Beam me up Scottie (who just came back), Vanje, MarrahG, bliss_eternal, Xultar, steveleser, ismnotwasm, question everything, Mosby and a few other fellow MIRT people with whom I served.

(35,955 posts)Ladyhawke's list (btw, she's on mine) and yr additions are good ones. (34,648 posts)See how easy it is for a woman to be labeled ageist for not being suffiently grateful for everything they have done FOR or TO us?
I find it funny that the people who worry the most about ageism towards the older members of our society are the ones with such a negative opinion about young people and say ageist or youthist things about them. This same things goes for reverse racism and misandry. I am 100 percent certain that all of those people who called me racist or ageist are the ones who are actually racist as hell and fear young black women like me taking their power. Because i really am trying to empower black women to speak out and to not fear pushback from those standing in the way. And we will take our power. And we are not suffiently grateful for our rights that we are allowed to have or willing to shut up to please the majority. I get tired of the whole 'i marched for YOUR rights to be treated half way decent, so you need to respect us, stop making us uncomortable, and let us do all the speaking and decision making' attitude i see among some folks here.
Many people here are playing a strange game.

(10,622 posts)She went way out of her way once years back during a time of deep tragedy for me, even sent me some artwork and offered quite a bit of help. She may not know it but her efforts and those of a few others got me through that time when suicide seamed like a real option to me (an option I was smart enough not to mention to anybody)

(10,622 posts)of lefties that hung together of which I was admittedly the least among them. These days the right have taken up so much of what was once not their domain that anything to the left of Reagan has been redefined as fringe weirdos and some of our old haunts no longer even exist.
For me it was literally the best of times and the worst of times.

No, seriously. Hmmmm, well, for my uber-exclusive party I'd start the guest list with everybody I like, and leave off everyone I don't.
You know who you are.

(10,893 posts)"Hey, a thread where we list our favorite DU members! What a great idea!"
mentioned those who they've been arguing with on here. My take from this is that it's basically a thread of people mentioning specific DUers who they find to be the most memorable, either positively or negatively.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Anyway, there are people I suppose it might be interesting to meet because I do suspect they're socks, or shared accounts, or maybe one expression of a part of someone's personality that is wildly different from how they are or who they have to be in real, actual life... from an academic or sociological perspective, that might be interesting.
A lot of people here are funny, and smart, and I like that, in all seriousness. I would hate to make an actual list because I'd probably leave someone out unintentionally, and I wouldn't want to do that. The people I gel with, pretty much know it. And there are people I disagree with, that I think are interesting people too.

(11,785 posts)A massive DU meetup would be fun, although I'm afraid I'd get interrupted in the middle of an interesting conversation by a jury summons. "Would the following DUers please report to room blahblah for jury duty..."

I couldn't possibly choose.
That said, let me say I cringed when I saw this thread. I knew I'd never make it on anyone's list and I figured some "long time" DUers would be a tad forgotten....
Which is so sad. Some of us have been here 10 years or more and are just forgettable.....
So I'd like to meet any DUer for lunch. If you're on DU, then I know it would be an interesting conversation even if we don't agree on everything.
If you're ever in the Chicago area, I'd love to arrange a meet-up!

(23,272 posts)I just invited seabeyond via pm.
Honestly though, I'm sitting here with my laptop, and a glass of wine, on the patio as the sun goes down and the horses are grazing, and thinking "everyone should be here..."
I have a lot more vegan spaghetti sauce on the stove and fresh organic greens from the garden, along with an intense garlic bread I make from scratch (don't go kissing folks after this!)
The door's open to any DUer...

I'm editing to add that, although I'm sure that you didn't mean it that way, some people are hurt because no one expressed a wish to meet them. Maybe it reminds folks of high school and all the cliques.

(10,893 posts)"Judging by how many hides I was getting last month I am genuinely shocked at how many times my name has popped up in this thread."
...I feel the opposite, judging by how few hides I have had so far in my 2 years here. I don't think I've gotten on anyone's bad side, but I guess I'm just too boring for a lot of the folks in this joint. Maybe I should post some cat threads!
I definitely am one of the many folks on this thread who enjoy your posts BTW. You add a much-needed perspective on DU.

(43,153 posts)In all seriousness, though, while I love interacting with everyone on DU, I'm not sure I'd like to meet them in person. Maybe it's because I like to keep separate as many personal details about my personal life from my DU persona as possible. (For starters, my name's not actually Tommy Carcetti.)
It's not that you all aren't lovely people. I'm sure you are.

I would love to meet leftyfingerpop, an old time duer who I believe was tombstoned for sexist comments(could be wrong here). Was having a really difficult night one night and LFP was posting some funny stuff in the lounge. I went from tears of sorrow to tears of laughter almost immediately. Thanks for that LFP. I vaguely remember a post about him being on top of his desk at work naked and just a snorkel and mask. Wondering why he got fired. So funny.

Mostly Minnesotans, including one I met here in Tokyo the other day. Of the DUers I haven't met yet, I would say that Yui Yoshida would be at the top of my list. I'd also like to meet Bonobo, and other Duers with ties to Japan.

(60,332 posts)Hero's disappoint.
If you have no hero's you have no expectations of anyone leaving all interactions to stand on their own. It also allows me to be me, my own success or failure judged against my own standard and not trying to aspire to be someone else.
What that does is eliminate the desire to need to meet anyone particular, if a meeting happens, it is spontaneous.
Don't be offended, it isn't that I don't want to meet any of you, just not favored to meeting anyone particular.
