(111,237 posts)ISIS might have been funded by Russia. They might have been funded by the US. Who knows? He doesn't and fortunately, he didn't hazard a guess.
The point is that the borders drawn by colonial powers at the end of WWI are no longer working, inter tribal feuds no longer allowing iron fisted dictators unlimited power to oppress people because there is no one to challenge them, keeping the oil flowing.
World powers would rather deal with smaller, less powerful, and more stable countries these days. A new map respecting sectarian and cultural borders would supply this. That would also be a rationale for not directly challenging ISIS with air strikes followed by invasion, that and the public doesn't support having advisors there, much less a shooting war. We've already done this twice. We're all done.
We also don't know what's going on with the other majority Sunni countries like Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Those might also be powers funding and arming ISIS to get that map redrawn.
My best hope is that they consolidate their borders and their power and spend so much time and effort doing so that they forget about Israel, at least inside their 1948 borders, and that political changes are forced there by the changed landscape.
I find all this more likely than an antique letter written by a plutocrat for plutocrats not born yet driving the world's affairs. Even the Foundation ran out of gas eventually.
