Researchers found 1/4 of women & 2/3 of men chose --- electric shocks over their own company

People, and especially men, hate being alone with their thoughts so much that they’d rather be in pain. In a study published in Science Thursday on the ability of people to let their minds “wander” — that is, for them to sit and do nothing but think — researchers found that about a quarter of women and two-thirds of men chose electric shocks over their own company.

But I would argue that you can definitely ponder, think or daydream while listening to music.

Prefer electric shocks over their own company they work for.

I think I'm alone with my own thoughts too often.

and could see how that would be true.

Should we maybe teach kids to meditate so that they learn to be alone with themselves?

Some of us would rather be alone...with cats, of course.

The people that shock themselves are the poor folks who have given their lives to constant stimulation. Be it smartphone, texting, attention seeking, etc -- it's all a natural expression of the extroversion required to constantly distract from the horror of their own mortality.

Deep man, deep...

Has this percentage changed over time? Is it related to our overstimulating cultural environment?

I guess I live in my head too much sometimes but I feel overwhelmed if I don't get some quiet time in the day to just think and daydream.

There are times when that's all I do, is sit and think about stuff.

And while my mind can stray into some not-so-fun territory sometimes, most of the time I find it pretty darned entertaining.

I love just sitting and doing nothing. I spent 30 minutes this morning in a guided meditation. When it got to the point that the guide was instructing listeners to open their eyes, I just wanted her to shut up and leave me where I'm at in blessed silence w/brain in theta. Next time I listen, I'm leaving myself more time and shutting off the tape at those instructions.

for not getting enough/any Theta.

And if those deleterious effects are so common they are just considered "normal" or attributed to something else.
