(9,688 posts)True, it's a betrayal of everything that the USA supposedly believes in.
True, the alternate realities promoted to cover for the betrayal aren't consistent.
But I think people will submit.

(57,936 posts)to such overbearing abuse of government authority. Someone somewhere in our government will make evil use of the system that has been established for whatever "good" reason. It's just the way this kind of system works. It's a real pity.
It is important to have checks and balances and a free press. The NSA programs just make those important institutions very weak. The NSA programs nullify checks and balances and a free press because they are watching and hovering over enough of the communication in the world and in America to cause each of us to know that they could be watching our communications any time they wish. That is called chilling speech. Just knowing you could be watched even if you are not being watched causes you to think before expressing yourself. The First Amendment was written to enable each of us to express ourselves freely. Now, our speech is chilled.
And the people, the employees, the managers who do the spying are in a class unto themselves. As are those who work in the FISA courts. They are the chosen few who can, when they wish, with minimal paperwork and red tape, completely "own" any person they wish to "own."

(45,251 posts)My browsing habits are so boring the only time I even stumbled on porn, which everyone claims shows up unwanted at the drop of a hat, was when I was trying to figure out a joke someone had posted. I didn't recognize one of the words and BAM. One time in over 10 years of internet.
You know what I ads I am seeing tonight on DU? Tickets for the Magna Carta exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which I posted about, and pretty dinnerware, which I love. I may be the only posters who loves her DU ads, that's how boring my browsing habits are. But, I "went private" on principle.
Then, I had some problems. It probably wasn't the browser, but I went back to Mozilla, just in case.
Ya know what? Maybe I will go back to the privacy browser. Maybe we all should, just to clog their fucking unconstitutional system. Think I'll post that as a reply to the OP, too.

So I was looking for large pots, big enough to plant tomatoes. This was before marijuana was legalized. I bet I'm on their list too. Never did find quite the pots I wanted.
merrily
(45,251 posts)would get you suspected of illegal marijuana use? If not, I am totally missing the reference.
If I ever grow fruits or veggies, it will be tomatoes first, with heirloom seeds. You can't duplicate soil and a climate, but there is no substitute for a very fresh New Jersey beefsteak tomato. Maybe I'd even get some NJ soil from my relatives.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)also good. New Jersey is not called the garden state for nothing.
Homegrown tomatoes are the best. You cannot buy anything better than a fresh, just off the vine homegrown tomato. I grow some heirloom.
i just googled for pots.

(10,650 posts)This is supposedly a more liberal community, yet many toe the NSA line. That indicates the majority of Americans are likely willing to accept whatever NSA and other security state agencies do.

(45,251 posts)against Bush's spying, when that had been revealed.
I had already made a post about that higher up in the same thread that the doofus either hadn't read or was pretending not to have seen so he, she or it could insult me. (For all I know, my own post about the Bush era may have given him the idea of exactly how to challenge me. Earlier in the thread, I had posted that I hadn't been as politically aware in the Bush era as I am now, so I had been clueless about the extent of the NSA then.)
When I said I had already answered that question upthread, he, she or it accused me of only pretending to care about the Constitution. What was supposed to be my real motivation? He, she or it never said. I guess I was supposed to be a Republican or an Obama hater or a Libertarian or something, but my "real" motive was never specified. (Some shills probably know exactly how to attempt to discredit critics of the USG by insinuation without getting a post alerted on.)
With the exception of a couple of posters whom I suspect of being paid shills, they have only about 4 moves, mostly nasty, and they use them over and over. So fucking boring. If I owned a board, I'd ban anyone I suspected of being a boring shill.

(11,785 posts)of it that was a take-off on chain letters. It was something like "cut off an inch of your penis and send it to six people and you'll get a gazillion inches back".
