This bullshit, somehow, speaks to a large swath of the people of this country.

MANY people who I know from the gym, my very much middle, maybe a tick below middle, income neighborhood, etc.

It isn't as simple as people who have a lot of money think like this.

This taps into a sense of victimhood and self pity that is pervasive with a LOT of people living day to day.

"Gee, I work so hard and am just barely making it while there are all these millions and millions of other people who do absolutely nothing and live off welfare."

A STUNNING amount of people believe this shit.

That's right, the 'shitty' job STILL needs to be done, and SOMEBODY has to do it. Do we just guarantee that there will always be 'shitty' jobs by NOT paying what a job is worth? In other words, there is always going to be the need for the people the 'supervisor' tells what to do...ALL supervisors and NO laborers doesn't really work out so well.

Scrooge did say that and I am quoting him without proper citation, but I am also quoting Romney when he said during his 47% speech that was secretly recorded! that people think, among other things! that they are entitled to food. I personally found that to be one of the most craven, evil things I have heard anyone, let alone a presidential candidate, say. The concept of entitled privilege amongst these depraved wealthy people is stunning.

and he gave me the same pat answer that they all give: "We don't need to raise the minimum wage. That will destroy jobs. If people don't like living on the minimum wage they need to just get a better job." Yep it's just that simple in wingnut land. You don't like living on $7.25 an hour? Well just go get a job that pays $20 an hour! Problem solved!
You see, in wingnut land people stay at these low-wage jobs because they are just too lazy to go out and get a "real" job. Plus they get these "benefits" for being poor--you know food stamps, subsidized housing, etc. (They're leeches in other words.) Yes indeed if you are barely able to pay the rent and put food on the table it's your own damn fault according to the wingnuts. You should have gone to Harvard and become a doctor! (Reality is not part of a conservative's mindset.)

29. I just don't get the "logic" of their position
Wed Jul 9, 2014, 10:45 PM
Jul 2014

People making minimum wage pay rent, buy cheap food, and almost nothing else. They don't go to the dentist, they wear the same clothes year after year, they don't go to restaurants, they don't go shopping. A meaningful increase to $15/hr. would change all that. They'd have disposable income. They'll buy stuff. Of course there'd be a corresponding increase in other wages too, resulting in even more spending. More spending equals more sales the way I see it.

In Bhutan they have an index called the GNH, and it measures their gross national happiness. If we had such a thing here, a significant boost in wages would almost have to lead to an increase in the GNH. Happier workers, far fewer stressed out people and families, less depression and less crime. I don't know what the percentages would be, buy they'd be measurable and that makes it worthwhile.

Oh, and hey, welcome to DU!

When I think about families trying to live on minimum wage (even with two adults working), I ask myself whether the guys who decided to pay that wage that low can count.

An economy is a series of exchanges. When many, many people do not earn enough to participate in the series of exchanges, the economy comes to a halt.

I don't care how high the stock market goes. The rich can't just buy and sell stocks to each other and leave the little guys out for very long.

The economy is a series of exchanges.

More jobs would be created by the simple fact that people would have more money to spend. There would be more demand, which would lead to companies hiring more people. But know companies they would probably hire no one and the reason would be they can afford to pay more employees.
