Elephants shield young from rockets at Tel Aviv zoo

While Israelis in the Tel Aviv area have been running for cover and crouching on the sides of highways when alarm sirens blared in recent days to warn of incoming rockets, the animals in Israel’s zoos had nowhere to go

Still, some creatures’ protective instincts kicked in.

Those instincts were on display Wednesday at the Zoological Center Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan — commonly known as “the safari” — as four adult Asian elephants trumpeted upon hearing the warning siren before gathering protectively around two small calves.

Zoo spokeswoman Sagit Horowitz posted a video of the elephants protecting their young.

“This morning, as the alert sounded in the area and in the Safari in Ramat Gan, the adult elephants trumpeted loudly and gathered around the young female elephants, Latangi and Lalana, in an attempt to protect them,” Horowitz wrote.

Including women and children.

100,000 told by "humanitarian" Israel to flee their homes.

They stop the rockets, the bombs stop. Simple solution. Also nothing stops the Palestinians from telling Hamas to stop putting their rocket launchers in residential areas. Another simple solution.

And the answer to rocket launchers in residential areas is to blame Hamas for civilian deaths?

One would think that the nation with the full faith and financial backing of the mightiest military in the history of the world would be able to exercise greater restraint in the face of a disorganized and vastly inferior power.

But one would be wrong.

is because of the Iron Dome. It is ludicrous for anyone to suggest Israel just let rockets fall down on it. I don't think that would be your reaction if rockets were coming in on the area you live in.

No one is suggesting that Israel let rockets fall down on it, but do you think that it helps that Israel kills dozens of Palestinians in retaliation for a few ineffectually lobbed rockets? Seriously?

The effectiveness of the iron dome is is actually a powerful argument against Israel's missile & bomb retaliation.

See my previous point about greater restraint and the lack thereof.

send off the rockets.

JERUSALEM — Israel reckoned with rising homegrown extremism Sunday as it arrested six Jewish suspects who are believed to have burned to death an Arab teenager in revenge for the killing of three Israeli teens.

The arrests shocked those on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide — Palestinians because many had assumed Israel would never act against its own, and Israelis because there had been widespread doubt that Jews could have carried out such a heinous crime.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/jerusalem-mayor-promises-justice-in-arab-teens-killing/2014/07/06/cc402520-39fa-417c-a1f7-49b84293bede_story.html

The governments in Palestine and Israel both need to discourage vendettas and attacks that are by nationalism or the desire for vengeance.

Israel appears to be beginning to stop the violence or at least punish the violence coming from its side. Palestine will hopefully soon do the same.

If you throw stones, you must expect retaliation. So why not stop the stone-throwing on both sides.

How often do we hear Israel punishing its military for killing Palestinian civilians? The current murder cases notwithstanding, Israel has never taken its military to task for the collateral damage it inflicts when attacking Hamas.

Instead, the explanation in every single case is that it's Hamas' fault for putting its rockets in civilian areas. In effect, they're blaming the victims again and again and again.

I would feel greater sympathy for Israel if they could come up with some kind of policy that didn't result in the bulldozing of Palestinian homes or the bombing of Palestinian children.

If Native Americans were to do so, I would have little moral standing to condemn their actions, and I sure as hell wouldn't claim any sovereign right to bomb their children to death as a result.

If someone's lobbing rockets at my house, I would want my government to decimate their society to the point that the survivors wouldn't think about doing that again.

It's only been 47 freaking years.

You want a simple solution: Treat the Palestinians like human beings. Get your foot off their neck. End the endless occupation. End the daily humiliations. End the beatings. End the killings. End the new settlements on Palestinian lands. End the destruction of Palestinian homes.

I used to be sympathetic to Israel. Not anymore.

And Palestinians were offered their own country by the U.N. They rejected it. They wanted it all. The West Bank used to be part of Jordan. How come no demand from Jordan to have it back? Because Jordan wants nothing to do with the Palestinians. Gaza used to be part of Egypt. How come no demand from Egypt to have it back? Because Egypt wants nothing to do with the Palestinians.

"Humans are dumb mommy."
