They post sensibly in threads in all DU forums, use available DU tools, serve on more juries than anyone recognizes and generally use DU as the owners of the forum intended. Nobody notices them, but they are the heart of DU.

(146,248 posts)Always, I see screen names I don't recognize from posts in threads. Of course, I also appreciate all DUers who post OPs and those who can be counted on to reply in threads, but DU isn't just made up of the highly visible posters. What is written on DU reaches a large group of people who do not normally post often. Frequent posters are automatically visible, but there is a much larger group that isn't visible.

(4,835 posts)And that was over two years ago (I think). I spend quite a lot of time composing responses that I decide not to post. I'm here every day reccing a bunch of threads, but since it's because I like to interact with folks on line - I don't deserve any appreciation.
DU is the entity that deserves the appreciation IMHO. I work at home and care for my autistic adult progeny and DU provides me the opportunity to interact with like-minded people, and to discuss issues with folks that I disagree with.
It is a good community despite the many criticisms that I see about it (here at DU unfortunately).

(21,020 posts)about someone else, "S/he is/was a 'good DUer'", I always wonder what that phrase even means.
Does it mean that the person follows the Party line, posting only what the majority post?
Does it mean the person tries in all good faith to follow the rules of online/discussion board etiquette?
Is the person always sweet and kind and non-offensive in everything s/he posts?
I never know what that term means.
If it means scenario #2, then there are tons of "good DUers" here, and I appreciate all of them.
If it means scenario #1, then I, for one, am probably not a "good DUer", or very popular even though I try my best to be as respectful as I can.
Thanks for this thread, MM.

Just not enough hours in the day to read all the good material posted here, but I'm most grateful to those that contribute to the groups I regularly read.
Juries - it seems I'm called ca 5 days out of seven recently, maybe more often. I don't mind, though I have to wonder about those who alert on comments that are mostly just voicing an opinion.
I don't believe I've been alerted on, but I'm not here to pick fights, and don't even feel the need to hang around when things get ugly. There's too much to learn and see to waste my time that way.

While I may check in sporadically and post relatively infrequently, DU is my primary news filter.
This home and its members lead me to a richer variety of vetted information and opinion sources than any other single site -- as well as laughter when I need it most.
