Appreciation Thread for All the DUers Nobody Notices

They post sensibly in threads in all DU forums, use available DU tools, serve on more juries than anyone recognizes and generally use DU as the owners of the forum intended. Nobody notices them, but they are the heart of DU.

Always, I see screen names I don't recognize from posts in threads. Of course, I also appreciate all DUers who post OPs and those who can be counted on to reply in threads, but DU isn't just made up of the highly visible posters. What is written on DU reaches a large group of people who do not normally post often. Frequent posters are automatically visible, but there is a much larger group that isn't visible.

And that was over two years ago (I think). I spend quite a lot of time composing responses that I decide not to post. I'm here every day reccing a bunch of threads, but since it's because I like to interact with folks on line - I don't deserve any appreciation.

DU is the entity that deserves the appreciation IMHO. I work at home and care for my autistic adult progeny and DU provides me the opportunity to interact with like-minded people, and to discuss issues with folks that I disagree with.

It is a good community despite the many criticisms that I see about it (here at DU unfortunately).

48. Whenever I see someone say
Fri Jul 11, 2014, 12:33 PM
Jul 2014

about someone else, "S/he is/was a 'good DUer'", I always wonder what that phrase even means.

Does it mean that the person follows the Party line, posting only what the majority post?

Does it mean the person tries in all good faith to follow the rules of online/discussion board etiquette?

Is the person always sweet and kind and non-offensive in everything s/he posts?

I never know what that term means.

If it means scenario #2, then there are tons of "good DUers" here, and I appreciate all of them.

If it means scenario #1, then I, for one, am probably not a "good DUer", or very popular even though I try my best to be as respectful as I can.

Thanks for this thread, MM.

I was off the radar in high school but didn't realize just how much of a ghost I had been until I took it upon myself to help organize a class reunion. The one other classmate with the same first name received so many compliments for a job well done that she felt compelled to apologize to me. It's many years later, but the memory still stings.

Most of gravitate to several forums and groups, and thus there are many active in other groups that we may not patronize.
Just not enough hours in the day to read all the good material posted here, but I'm most grateful to those that contribute to the groups I regularly read.

Juries - it seems I'm called ca 5 days out of seven recently, maybe more often. I don't mind, though I have to wonder about those who alert on comments that are mostly just voicing an opinion.

I don't believe I've been alerted on, but I'm not here to pick fights, and don't even feel the need to hang around when things get ugly. There's too much to learn and see to waste my time that way.

We all participate in our own way, and that's what matters most. I check in here frequently for honest news reporting and realize that my TV is rarely on any more because of that. I would rather discuss issues. DU is for me not about the individuals who post here. I care about those I know. But the internet world is not my social world.

I don't know DUers outside of DU.

I love DU and when posts start to get nasty, I just move along. Not criticizing those that engage in spirited debate - it's just not my style. The amount of information that is posted here every day keeps me informed and entertained.

I may be one of those. I a a long-time member, I contribute financially, and have served on almost 300 juries. I only have a problem with one person here, who I am almost certain is a troll. I have never had a time-out, although it could happen!

Nice thread!

I'm one that fits the mostly lurking and only rarely posting category. I so appreciate DU and what it means to me. Thank you for this thread.

Look, over there! There's a cold beer that is in danger of warming up before it has been consumed in its 'proper' chilled state! Who wiill save it from such disgrace and degradation?

(door flies open with a loud thud)Stand back, citizen. THIS looks like a job for...HYPER-AVERAGE MAN!

Thank Flying Spaghetti Monster you've come, Hyper-Average Man, we didn't know what to do!

DU is our go to site for news, with lots of (usually) very informed commentary and context. I often learn things from more smarter people here... like you!

Thanks for this MineralMan

No need for singling out one for a "cult of personality" tongue bathing by different sects on here for the most outspoken and dare I say bullying examples of their clan. My post count is quite low compared to some that have also been here for over 10 years, but I'm thankful for the opportunity to have such a community of like minded souls.

Keep those posts coming, please.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]What you say farther down about DU being "home" to many posters is absolutely true for me. It's always up when I'm home, working or not. Always.

While I may check in sporadically and post relatively infrequently, DU is my primary news filter.

This home and its members lead me to a richer variety of vetted information and opinion sources than any other single site -- as well as laughter when I need it most.

Thanks, MM, for this thread and all your contributions.

Here's to DU's fabulous founders and fantastic members!

I have been here for years now. I love it as a place to vent with people of the same opinions. Now unemployed at 59, for over a year and still looking, I find that DU has become a second home to me. I have much more time now to devote to DU, and keep up with what the GOP has screwed up today. I have ranted about everything. I have been humble at times, too. It's "THE" place for me to go. And it's all because of the wonderful contributors to this site. Thank you all for reading all my bullshit throughout the years, and giving feedback.

I really enjoy my time here. TY all.
