Disease Threat From Immigrant Children Wildly Overstated
The Central American kids arriving in Texas are likely to be better-vaccinated than children in Texas.

With thousands of children from Central America arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, an old plague is once again sweeping the countrythe fear of the diseased immigrant.
Our schools cannot handle this influx, we dont even know what all diseases they have, U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said recently. Our health care systems cant withstand this influx.
Fox News commentator Cal Thomas asks, for example, if the unaccompanied minors pouring over the border
have brought with them proof of vaccination? Thomas accuses the border-crossers of harboring vaccine-preventable diseases such as mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus and diphtheria.
Before demonizing undocumented children, we should look at the facts: The vast majority of Central Americans are vaccinated against all these diseases. Governments concerned about health, and good parents investing in their kids, have made Central American kids better-vaccinated than Texan kids. We fear them not because they are actually sick, but because of powerful anti-immigration narratives that link foreigners to disease.
Consider, for example, Guatemala. According to the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), Guatemalan kids are more likely than Texans to be immunized for most infectious diseases. Guatemala has universal health care. Vaccines are 100 percent funded by the government.

(3,433 posts)Neither the republicans or democrats "own" this issue. I have worked in healthcare for 13 years and currently live in massachusetts. I am an RN but currently I work as a consultant to assist providers with improving patient care through workflow and clinical data analysis. I also help practices remain compliant with initiatives such as ARRA, PCMH etc and help them write grants. Anyway, I can tell you that this stupid dangerous movement is growing and it knows no socioeconomical class or political party. In Massachusetts alone we have seen confirmed cases of Measles, Mumps and Pertussis. Two of my pediatrician friends now discharge patients from their practice if they refuse immunizations. The others require waivers. Those physicians that I mentioned above have patients who are simply unable to receive immunizations. In a 6 month period 30% of new patients refused vaccinations and it got to the point where it was a patient safety issue for the others. Ugh, few issues make my blood boil more than this. People like those I mentioned above who are unable to be vaccinated for varying reasons, immunity suppressed individuals etc all rely on community immunity. People are more likely to have an adverse reaction from aspirin than the immunizations from the childhood vaccination schedule.
