Israel to continue air campaign while preparing for ground invasion of Gaza, IDF says

Note: If this is deemed inappropriate for GD, so be it, but at this time, this crisis has ramifications that go far beyond the borders of Israel and Palestine and impact U.S. policy.

Israel’s air force will continue to pound targets in the Gaza Strip over the course of at least the next 24 hours, the IDF Spokesperson said on Saturday.

Brig.-Gen. Moti Almoz told Israel Radio on Saturday that there were still “many” targets in the Gaza Strip remaining. While air force sorties will continue, the army high command is simultaneously preparing for a ground incursion.

Almoz told Israel Radio that Hamas is “growing increasingly frustrated over its inability to exact casualties among Israeli civilians.” He said that the army was diligently working to avoid civilian casualties among the Palestinian population in Gaza.

Palestinian officials in the Gaza Strip said at least 16 people were killed overnight Friday during Israeli airstrikes as Operation Protective Edge entered its fifth day.

I believe that Israel has- no pun intended- engaged in massive overreaction and overkill again. The right wing government there has shown little restraint and the result is a tragedy and disaster in the ongoing tragedy and disaster that is Gaza. No, Hamas isn't innocent, but the Israeli government is all to eager to take advantage of the situation- civilian casualties be damned. The rhetoric about civilian casualties doesn't ring true in the face of the deaths and injuries sustained by civilians in Gaza over the past few days.
