Threats pour into Coeur d’Alene for officer who fatally shot lab

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho— An officer fatally shooting a black lab has resulted in the Coeur d’Alene Police Department receiving threatening calls and emails.

On Thursday, authorities said they would not release the name of the officer who claimed he shot a “vicious” pit bull during a call on Wednesday. Coeur d’Alene PD leaders said they have received voicemails and emails threatening the officer.

Leaders claimed the officer was distraught following the deadly shooting which has made headlines from Los Angeles to London.

Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Ron Clark said the shooting would be investigated and reviewed for policy and legal compliance.

... but a good public shaming, for a shameful act, is apparently the only possible recourse in all these Cop Shoots Dog for No Damn Reason stories.

If society won't jail these monsters for animal cruelty, then I have no problem with them spending the rest of their lives in fear.

Yet I do---hoping against hope THIS time will be different--the police will take responsibility, apologize and institute very strict procedures to prevent its recurrence....

And always, I am left wanting and depressed....

Animal control officers originally identified the dog as a pit bull. A veterinarian later identified the dog as a lab mix.

9. "the dog lunged out of the open driver’s side window"

So the dog stuck its head out of the "partially open" (according to the video) window and barked. You know how many times that's happened to me, startling me out of my shoes? I think dogs like to do that for fun, being silent and then suddenly acting territorial when you approach their master's car. Of course every year there are a few fatal dog attacks, but in my experience it's usually just display and loudness. I've never even been bitten by a dog. If I shot a dog in someone's car every time one startled me, i probably would have shot dozens. You back away. You don't shoot. What if that had been a kid with a cap gun lunging out the window ambushing the cop and yelling "bang bang"? So the officer is distraught? What about the dog's owner?
