ok. it might have taken more than minutes. not more than an hour. the northern rain and storm came in. it was 91 this afternoon. right now at 7:30, 66
i LOVE it
this has been the best summer. we generally have to water twice a week. i watered twice in may. none in jume. and once, so far this july. i did it middle of last week, assured we would get some rain this week and i would not have to water for a good couple week, at least.
just great.
i hate the heat.

Granted it's because all the humidity is holding the heat in and preventing any breeze.

(1,352 posts)But it did give me perspective on how annoyed to get or not get when the creek floods and puts most of my gravel driveway into my yard. Annoying as hell, and costs money to put back, but much better than the joy that was watching them evacuate my kids.
That said, I'd still prefer not to flood again in the next few days -- we had enough of that 3 weeks ago -- so I'll ask the weather fairies to keep the storms downstate so you can enjoy them seabeyond!

(1,352 posts)We live on a cute little creek that turns into the Flooding Stream From Hell every couple of years after heavy rainfall, and our property flash-flooded on June 25 -- turned the house into an island, put the driveway in non-driveway places, left really impressive trees and other woodland debris all over the place. But it didn't move the shed, and the sump pumps kept up with the groundwater rising into the basement (for the most part), so it was definitely better than the joy that was Irene in 2012 (which involved the swift-water rescue people, who seemed honestly excited to try out their equipment, lol).

(11,065 posts)We had a brief storm blow through, and I thought that was the end of it, so I took the dog for a walk. We were a good 10 blocks from home when suddenly this massive black horizon came rolling up and spewed lakes of water on us. It was the thunder and lightening I didn't like most of all though.
We got totally drenched. Even my pack of smokes in my pocket turned to brown mush with bits of cardboard pulp. Doggie had a blast playing in the white water rapids barreling down the sides of the roads. Even in middle of the road it was ankle deep in a lot of places. But I wanted to run home and hide in the closet... I hate thunder. My dog pays it no mind.

It's so stinking hot here today! The AC in the office never clicked off.
The forecast says some rain just because we will have some of that cool air mixed with humidity. Nothing serious though. I've been spoiled this year already, we've only had three days over 100 degree temps so far.

(5,364 posts)I know it's a short lived fleeting feeling, but as a thick-blooded visceral hater of hot weather, seeing a 90 plus muggy day having its back broken is a tremendous morale boost. What makes it even better is if the storm is proceeded by cool gusty breezes for a time before the rain hits. Seeing and feeling the temperature drop from 96 to 66 in less than 5 minutes, the the rain comes, giving the air a clean feel, in contrast to the air I was "wearing" as if it were an inch thick layer of scuzzy muck coating my body. It's all I can do to contain my exuberance and not go out on the driveway pump my fist into the air and taunt the heat gods.
Sure it's fleeting, as 20-30 minutes later the clean cool air becomes muggy again despite the cloud cover. What sucks worse is if it happens too early in the afternoon and then dissipates, the sun will come out in the super-humid air and roast you again.
Even so, I'll take whatever break I can get from the "heat miser".

(36,269 posts)...is the lovely mild summers and winters. No one here has AC, and in winter we heat mostly with a small wood stove. Our winter heating budget, which includes hot water and cooking, rarely exceeds $100/month. Today's high temp: 74F, sunny and dry. Currently 68F (6:30 PM) and tonight's forecast low temp is 57F.
