Thor Will Now Officially Be a Woman in Marvel Comics

http://time.com/#2987183/gay-census-bisexual-cdc/

But don't call her a goddess

From now on, the comic book character Thor will no longer be represented as a man in Marvel comics. ABC’s The View announced Tuesday that future stories will feature the god — not goddess — of thunder as a woman.

“This is not She-Thor,” senior writer Jason Aaron said in a Marvel release. “This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

According to an impressively comic jargon-filled tweet, the female depiction will still wield Thor’s weapon of choice:

a gimmick to sell more books. Which often works in the short run.

But of all the superheros out there, this was one of the strangest choices to try this particular tweak with.

why not Thor's daughter Thruer, whose mother was killed by a serpent? Or any of these female Norse mythological figures:

Hel - Queen of Helheim, the Norse underworld (perfect villian)
Freyja - Goddess of love, fertility, and battle
Hlín - Goddess of consolation and protection
Jörð - Goddess of the Earth
Yggdrasil - Goddess of life. Tree of life. Connects the 9 worlds.

That didn't take me long to look up.

Why not feature some of the other strong female characters from Norse mythology, such as Sif or Freya? Or even one of the Valkyries.

I wonder if this will hurt sales of new Thor comics?

If the character regularly changed hosts ala Dr Who, then all for it but this? Just seems odd.

The God Thor became bored with other Gods & went to earth to have a night on the town.

Thor wakes the next morning with a stranger in his bed. he gets up & proclaims-I'm THOR!!!
The stranger rouses-Your thore-I can barely walk!

Really not a big deal. I find the attempt to change comic origins as a selling point tiresome, and would prefer they create a brand new powerful female character rather than trying to rebrand an old male one.

...3 if you count the frog.

“Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up. He is no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. And for the first time in history that hammer is being held by a woman,” said Goldberg.

Unfortunately while there was some joking to be had about who the character really is, no hard information was given other than, “The story behind her is she created herself. She was saved by Thor and she came down to Earth, followed him, and made herself look like Thor and so now she’s taking over.”

Odin created Donald Blake to be a host for his son and the two can exist independently of one another.

I suppose Odin decided he wanted another daughter and made a new body.

while stealing and withholding credit and compensation.

Don Blake was minding his own business when Kirby brought another iteration of Thor to Marvel.

Thor once again falls from the Asgardian version of grace, so a woman gets to pinch-hit for a year or two until Goldilocks comes back and she gets shunted off to "extra in a superhero crowd shot" status.

She will be the female version of a man. It shows had bad comic book developers are at making strong female characters. At least they could make Thor transsexual.
