Witness to a shelling: first-hand account of deadly strike on Gaza port
There is a deafening explosion, then a second. Four children are dead. Four survivors reach the safety of our hotel
Only afterwards do we discover there are four others who are dead, all children, lying on the wall. I am shown a picture of one of the dead boys, his skin scorched and bruised. Their names are released later: Ahed Bakr, aged 10; Zakaria, 10; and two other boys from the Bakr family, both named Mohammad, aged 11 and nine.
The second shell catches the survivors as they reach the brightly coloured tents. As it explodes, my colleagues, now standing by the terrace wall, shout at unseen Israeli gunners who can't hear them: "They are only children."
The man makes it to the terrace first, scrambling up a steep sandy bank. A skinny man in his 30s, he groans and holds up a T-shirt already staining red with blood where he has been hit in the stomach. He faints, and as he grows pale and limp he is carried to a taxi waved down in the street.

(3,864 posts)I'm listening to an interview with Alex Perry on Fresh Air. Acc to him Boko Haram is Lord of the Flies on steroids + religious context. They kill only to kill, and they don't try to avoid death for themselves.
Perry describes a video in which the boko haram are advancing, and they are being shot at, and they don't try to avoid being killed.
They are young, acc. to him, badly educated, and not even able to think. "Boko Haram doesn't have logical reasons for the atrocities it commits." http://www.wnyc.org/story/nigerias-boko-haram-more-extreme-than-al-qaida-journalist-says/
(video at link).
He says what they really want is publicity, which the Bring back the Girls campaign gave them, but that if they had been boys they would have had their throats cut.

No, it's not germane to the slaughter of children, but it seems to comfort all the right people if it's said often enough. Not to mention that Israel will have to defend itself a lot to fend off the righteous anger and retribution that is the normal and natural consequence for their murderous actions.

Anger is rising over civilian deaths -- including those of four children killed while playing on the beach.
The boys, ages 9 to 11, died Wednesday when a shell from an Israeli gunship exploded near them at the Al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to Palestinian officials.
An Israeli official said the shelling was another example of Hamas using civilians as human shields -- intimating that the boys had been left to play near a rocket launcher.
"What they are deliberately doing is seeking to kill as many Palestinians as possible in order to yell to the world to, 'Help us,' " Israeli Cabinet member Naftali Bennett told CNN. "This is cynical and this is cowardly."

Dammit. Just stop it. So sick of people insisting that "because God said"... Enough. Are these enough deaths yet to make up for the deaths of the Israeli teens?

(37,364 posts)a couple of those kids. They are the same age my daughter was when I was trying to get my kids out of post-revolutationary Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. There is no defense for what adults do to children in wars. There's no defense for what people are asking to be done with the child refugees on our borders right now just none. Any god that would be pleased with any of these horrific acts is not a god worth serving.
