Pro-Russian rebels seize black box, send it to Russia for investigation

MH17 Black Box ‘Sent to Moscow for Investigation’

MOSCOW — A Malaysian Boeing 777 carrying 295 people on board was shot down by a surface-to-air missile outside the mining town of Shakhtersk in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, an area controlled by rebels. Ukrainian, Russian, and pro-Russian rebel officials all confirmed that a missile had taken down the plane. It fell from a height of more than 10,600 meters; everybody on board, including dozens of children and 15 members of the crew, died in the catastrophe.

Pieces of the plane, human remains, passports, and money were spread in a radius of 15 kilometers around the catastrophe in the region of Grabovo and Rassypnaya, experts of Russian ministry of emergency affairs (MCHS) and witnesses reported. During the first few hours of the rescue operation, rebel militia discovered remains of over 100 people. There were no Russian citizens among the victims. The “black box” from the airplane traveled to Moscow “for investigation,” Russian radio Kommersant FM reported.

<...>

As for an investigation, the crash site has already been contaminated by local forces. There will be an international outcry, if, as reported, the black box is on its way to Moscow.

I remember during the Crimea annexation when he seemed clueless about what was happening on the ground. I'm not sure if his advisers tell him everything he needs to know.

It's a shame that there will never be a valid investigation of this. It's a shame for the victims and the families, who deserve justice.

or Putin are going to be truthful in their findings? How ridiculous is it that the most likely perpetrators, none of whom know diddly squat about how to investigate airliner crashes properly, are the ones controlling the site and pulling out the black boxes?

well, reputable news sources, they are waiting until they have some facts. Some however are asking the question 'Cui Bono'? Whoever can answer that will have the answer to who did it.

The US Corporate Media, never known for their reliance on facts, or for actual investigative journalism, however is 'implying' it must be 'putin's people'. How they know this so soon, is a mystery to many people. Chrystal ball maybe, or some other magical device because it sure isn't the evidence, as there is none, YET.

Taking credit for downing the jet when they still thought it was an An-26.

The only caveat is that they say "any black boxes that shall be found":

Сейчас к месту катастрофы выехала комиссия, все "черные ящики", которые будут обнаружены, мы готовы передать международным инстанциям для того, чтобы было проведено тщательное расследование", - сказал Пушилин.

"A commission is heading to the catastrophe site now. We are prepared to turn over all 'black boxes' that will be found to the international agencies for conducting a careful investigation," Pushilin said.

Strictly speaking, that doesn't cover previously found black boxes. Or that the organizational structure of the "republic" is moderately loose, with factions and commanders that don't always quite behave.

Question is the chain of command. I wouldn't be surprised if the data somehow became "unrecoverable." Or maybe the ACAS alarms will suddenly be activated, indicating "another plane in the vicinity." (Favorite Putinist theory, propagated by a Spanish speaking air traffic controller in Kiev, is that Ukrainian jets shot it down.)
