(14,733 posts)Now tbh, I don't know who shot the plane down. But another_liberal has no proof whatsoever of his claims, just his assertion that 'the rebels don't have that kind of weaponry'.
Except there have been multiple threads showing various reports of the rebels bragging about catching exactly that sort of weaponry, and later posting to also brag about having shot down a plane at that time, including partial ID'ing one of the dead people onboard.
So either somebody has been 'manufacturing' evidence right and left, or, Occam's razor, the evidence is what it is.
Nobody in the region had any reason to shoot down a civilian airliner, so the most likely scenario is that somebody mistook it for a military plane. Ukraine isn't in a 'hot war' with Russia, so they wouldn't be shooting at Russian planes, and the separatists don't even have any planes. Also on the lack of a 'hot war' between Ukraine and Russia, Russia wouldn't be shooting at any Ukrainian planes.
That leaves exactly one set of folks who might be interested in shooting down military planes. Separatists, who had JUST shot down two other military planes in the last 3 days.
So some dipstick without enough training didn't know how to tell planes apart using the instrumentation they had, saw a plane, assumed it must be Ukrainian military, and fired.
And another_liberal has been pushing his 'The 'evidence' points to Ukraine!' total crapola without a shred of evidence to back up his assertions.

(5,169 posts)They said it was an An-26 transport plane - brought down in the same place and time as the 777. But there is no signs of wreckage from an An-26, only the 777

(4,185 posts)'Same place' is rather vague.

(5,169 posts)NOBODY is reporting two airplane crash sites near the Progress mine in Torez, Ukraine from yesterday, August 17, 2014 AD. Only the Malaysian Airliner.

So where is the An-26 Transport plane wreckage?
Why did ITAR-TASS report the separatists downed an airplane?

DONETSK, July 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Militiamen of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic (DPR) brought down a military transport Antonov-26 (An-26) plane of the Ukrainian Air Force on the outskirts of the town of Torez, eyewitnesses said.
A missile hit the An-26, it fell on the ground and caught blaze, they said.
On July 14, militiamen of the self-proclaimed Luhansk Peoples Republic downed another An-26 of the Ukrainian Air Force.

WHERE is the Antonov-26 wreckage from yesterday?
Easy answer - it was mistaken identification. The plane shot down was a Boeing 777.

(4,185 posts)You see my point. Had their been no one on the ground shooting with a cell phone and broadcasting it via internet who know what we wouldn't know today.
It's a war zone. Planes are probably getting shot down. Because their are no photos a mouse click away means nothing
