Russia Not Going To Take Away Crashed Plane's Black Boxes: Lavrov

English.news.cn 2014-07-19 01:22:12

MOSCOW, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Russia is not going to take away the black boxes from the crash site of the Malaysian Boeing 777 in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"We are not going to take away these boxes, nor to violate the rules with regard to this sort of cases within the international community," the minister said in an interview with Russia's TV channel Rossiya 24.

"This is the sphere of activity for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), for the countries that are directly involved: the Netherlands, Malaysia and the ones whose nationals were on board, as well as Ukraine, of course," he said.

There is still no official confirmation on whether the flight recorders are found or not, nor their possible whereabouts.

The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) said Friday that the flight recorders, once found, should be handed over to the international investigative commission organized under the aegis of the ICAO.

NORTH OF GRABOVO, Ukraine — The black handbag lay on the field turning muddy from the rain. A beige wallet lay next to it, open, near credit cards and photographs carefully lined up next to each other on the wet grass, ordinary pictures of loved ones: son, daughter, father and mother.

The scene was replicated across the field – camera holders missing cameras, wallets missing cash, cosmetics and other items scattered in random patterns after a jet disintegrated and fell from the sky.

A day after a Malaysian airliner was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 aboard, twisted wreckage and mangled bodies remained uncollected as emergency personnel searched the site Friday.

In some areas of this field, near the small town of Grabovo in a remote eastern Ukrainian farming region close to the Russian border, backpacks and other carry-on luggage were grouped together. It was clear that looters had opened and rifled through some of them.

Large missile-carrying trucks coming from Russia would be pretty easy to track by satellites and other intelligence gathering means.

No report on where they are. And my news is maybe 2 hours old.

Poroshenko said that they should be given to international agencies for processing.

But he also opined they should stay in Ukraine. The order of these two statements isn't clear to me, and he may have said "stay in Ukraine" when there was word that they were heading to Russia. On the other hand, he may want to have the analysis done by international experts in Ukraine.
