Scandal taints Georgias GOP governor as Democratic challenger surges in polls

Georgias Gov. Nathan Deal (R) is caught in an ever-deepening ethics mess as his popularity with Republicans dwindles and a rising Democratic superstar takes the lead in the 2014 gubernatorial race.
Raw Story spoke with Bryan Long, director of the progressive group Better Georgia, who said the governor has run out of ways to skirt the corruption charges that have dogged him literally since the day he was sworn in. Particularly, Long said, now that Deals own hand-picked ethics investigator has turned against him.

No elected Republican has come out to support Gov. Deal, he noted. Hes on an island. His house of cards if falling.
One reason, Long said, is because they dont know which of his many stories to tell. The governors story is shifting so quickly that people in his own party are scared to tell the story because theyll contradict whatever the governor is saying from one day to the next.
A real mark of Deals mounting difficulties, however, is the fact that Democratic challenger State Sen. Jason Carter grandson of former President Jimmy Carter is beating Deal in the polls by a steadily widening margin.
Conservative pollsters Landmark Polling found that Carter received 48.7 percent in the poll and Deal received 41.3 percent. Libertarian Andrew Hunt received 4 percent of the vote in the poll. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.
If he wins in November, Carter would be the first Democratic Georgia governor since Gov. Roy Barnes, who left office more than a decade ago in 2003.
Furthermore, said Long, Deal has already cost taxpayers more than $3 million in settlements and damages.
There was a $1.15 million jury verdict, he said. After that, the state settled all the other whistleblower cases. And now, more are coming.
The governor is costing Georgia taxpayers every day hes in office, Long concluded.

(79,294 posts)the thing is, Deal should never have been elected in the first place
and being that this is Georgia, I wouldn't give up on Deal just yet.
These people have an irrational fear of the letter "D" behind politicians names.

(23,500 posts)Have Democrats won even one statewide office in Georgia since the Diebold Republican Electing machinez went in 12 years ago?

(26,273 posts)that wont change until the democrats in this state realize that they are going to have to focus more on the small local area elections that run the state itself for atleast the next 10 to 20 years.

Can you imagine if 9/11 happened on a Dem's watch? I absolutely believe it wouldn't have, but we would have never heard the end of it.
Swift-boating of Kerry and Max Cleland who were both a hero in Nam.

(4,510 posts)probably be stymied by the repub controlled legislature. Not to mention that the state party here is pretty weak and in my part of the state we really haven't seen him campaign that much.

I did see an ad tonight anti-Michelle Nunn. Tied her to Obama and Obamacare, but no one took responsibility for the ad: there is no response to her issues from anyone specifically. Koch influence, I trust, or some entity similar.
I thought it was weird.
