http://time.com/3012797/vaccine-rfk-jr-thimerosal/There are lots of places to go if you want dangerous crazytalk. There are websites, blog threads, cable channels trafficking in all kinds of addled nonsense about birther conspiracies and one-world governments. And then there was Robert Kennedy, Jr., the tireless, honest climate hero long famous for fighting the very good fight.
But that was then. RFK, Jr. may still know a thing or two about global warming, but he has taken a disreputable plunge into the world of anti-science with his new and inexplicable crusade: warning people about the dangers of vaccines.
Lets be clear: Kennedy will tell you hes not against vaccines themselves, but rather, against thimerosal, a vaccine preservative purportedly responsible for the rise in autism in the U.S. Hes even publishing a new bookThimerosal: Let the Science Speakmaking this frightening point. The problem is: hes wrongutterly wrong, so wrong its hard even to know what the biggest piece of that wrongness is.
But lets start with a single fact that ought to be, as the lawyers like to say, dispositive: the thimerosal aint there. With the exception of the flu vaccine, it was removed from or reduced to trace levels in all vaccines given to children under 6-years-old 13 years ago. You face a greater mercury risk eating seafood and fishand even that danger is low enough that the EPA recently recommended that pregnant and nursing women increase their intake of certain kinds of fish because the nutritional benefits outweigh the theoretical dangers.
Those who knuckle their forelock to the Kennedys will only be too eager to dismiss this article as an ugly smear, and the deliberate trashing of the world's bestest Democrat.
In reality, Kennedy is a dangerous loon, because of the disproportionately large megaphone he's able to wield.
I'm sure there will be more articles critical of RFK Jr leading up to the release of his book.
And I'll be happy to post 'em in GD.

(22,165 posts)There have been a rash of stories spreading on the internet about a study that supposedly concluded that smelling farts could decrease the risk of cancer, stroke, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, dementia, and several other ailments. While it should go without saying that this conclusion was taken entirely out of context, apparently we need to slow down and take it from the start.
...
So, to anyone who has been subjecting loved ones to increased amounts of pungent flatulence over the weekend and telling them its good for them: you owe them one hell of an apology.

(16,184 posts)I mean, if we have people so obviously interested in calling out anti-vax nonsense from someone who also has alternate explanations for Dallas 1963, then the real reason they must be going after him is because they're part of the cover up.
I mean, that logic totally holds up, guys.

(46,318 posts)I'm sure you will agree, that people like Dick Cheney, George Bush, and Ted Cruz are assholes.
Why?
Because of what they say.
So if a liberal hero says something stupid, and then doubles down on it, doesn't that make that liberal an asshole also?
Easy answer, it does.
Cynthia McKinney has some liberal credentials, but she couldn't keep her big mouth shut and made a total ass of herself.

Is pointing out her stupidity "slander?"
By your "logic," it is.

Vaccines have been such an enormous public health success, that people have forgotten just how bad these preventable diseases were.

(21,786 posts)and he's stupidly wrong anyway; thimerosal was never in the MMR vaccine (which is the vaccine the anti-vaccine cranks most often link with autism, based on a flawed and fraudulent paper). Thimerosal was removed from all childhood vaccines over a decade ago; autism rates? Failed to decline.
