Turkish PM to CNN: Israel Has Surpassed What Hitler Did in Gaza
by Matt Wilstein | 2:31 pm, July 24th, 2014
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been a vocal opponent of Israels military offensive into Gaza over the last several days, but in an interview with CNN International that aired on Thursday morning, he escalated his rhetoric, standing by an analogy he made between the modern Israeli government and the Nazis.
I completely stand by my comments, Erdoğan said through a translator, referring to parallels he drew between Israel and the Nazis last week. You can see that what Israel does to Palestine, to Gaza right now, has surpassed what Hitler did to them.
He made sure to clarify that he does not approve or accept what Hitler did to the Jews during World War II, but added, Right now we do accept this persecution, this massacre, this genocide by Israel.

(25,586 posts)Are you actually contending that's where things could go? Is that the level to which the conversation has devolved?

(18,219 posts)The Israeli actions are devolving, and if it doesn't stop, it could get much worse for the Palestinians....hence, my "yet".

(31,798 posts)Because he's not helping. And until Turkey admits they actively engaged in genocide against the Armenian people - they are the last ones who ought to be making comparisons. They created the modern age of genocide.

(31,798 posts)We still don't know how my father's great grandmother survived / dodged the trail of tears. But I would say it was several hundred years and involved Spain, France, Great Britain, etc etc.We learned it from them . . . Yet they never admit their guilt in the murders of millions of people.
However in the Modern Age of Genocide - Lemkin coined the term as a result of his horror at and study of Armenia. Also note that religious wingnut Rushdooney ended up here as his family had fled the horror inflicted by Turkey on his family. Imagine a world without Dobson, Ralph Reed, cray cray fundamentalists like the folks at Hobby Lobby. Thieir common point of entry on the American political map was Rushdooney.
Damn you Turkey! They basically pushed that wingnut theocrat right into the arms of America - National Day of Prayer and all.

"Turkish parliament passed a bill giving authorities greater control of the Internet in the country by blocking webpages and content it considers insulting, or that invade privacy. Before the bill, offensive content like child pornography and pages encouraging suicide were banned, but now websites considered defamatory are also subject to removal. The crackdown internet and press freedoms has been met with increasing volatile protest over the last several weeks and months.
Startling statistics from Google clearly show the Turkish government's tightening grip around Internet freedom; the search engine saw a 966 percent increase in requests from Turkey asking them to remove content from Google products, compared to a 70 percent increase from the United States.
Turkey recently was ranked 154th in the annual press freedom rankings by Reporters Without Borders, a woefully low position that doesn't show any sign of improving. Last year, Turkish police cracked down on Twitter users for shedding light on police brutality and making what the government referred to as "propaganda."
