See it: Newborn baby and pit bull puppy become best friends

A YouTube video and a collection of Instagram photos showing the blossoming friendship between a newborn baby and a pit bull puppy are making people squeal with delight across the Internet. The video and photos have been shared and liked thousands of times and Buzz Feed initially surfaced the images.

The two cuties were captured by the baby’s mother Brandi Leigh Hodges, 25, of Madison, N.C.

“My fiance and I are both die hard animal lovers and adore pit bulls,” Hodges told WGHP TV. “We’ve always said we would get a puppy when we have a baby so they can grow up together and have a special bond. We never knew it would be as sweet as this.”

I was not going to post on this thread but wondered if anybody else is shouldered with preconceived biases.

You just can't trust young kids to play nice with dogs. Once he gets motor control skills, he'll probably be yanking ears and tails and so on.

That pit bull is going to grow much faster than the baby. I know not all pit bulls are bad. It's the owners. But why risk this baby's life in hopes they raise the pit bull the right way. All dogs can be dangerous, but a Chihuahua can't rip the baby into pieces in a matter of minutes.

No freakin' way.

A dog could easily suffocate a baby, or worse.

Sorry for the downer, but not with my kid.

You know, there was a person with a camera there, probably the parent. I don't think you have to be alarmist about suffocation when both puppy and baby are awake and being supervised.

As long as it makes a cute video, that's all that matters to some people.

Would be no different if a lab puppy, or a pug puppy, or a dane puppy, or a corgi puppy...

Oh, wait...nevermind.

Good lord, People! The baby isn't being left alone with the dog, this looks perfectly supervised and under control. The puppy will bond with the baby and be protective of it.

my first thought was how great it would be for the kid to have that puppy and dog to grow up with, and how sad when that best-friend dog dies of old age while the kid is just a teenager.

It's funny how we tend to show our prejudices without realizing it. Lol

Pits are as ordinary as any other working breed dog. Yes, they were bred to fight. Specifically they were bred to fight each other, but if you look at the origins of dog fighting, you will find that these fights were not what most people picture. The event of bloodshed was not only rare, but discouraged. The following is an excerpt from the information on Pits from the ASPCA website.

Despite the fact that pit bulls were bred to fight with each other, early breeders took pride in producing dogs that were trustworthy and friendly to people. Handlers bathed their opponent’s dog before a match, stood in the pits with the battling dogs and often pulled them apart to end a fight. Any dog who behaved aggressively toward a person was culled, or killed, to avoid passing on such an undesirable trait. Pit bulls typically lived in their owner’s homes, where they earned the nickname “nursemaid’s dog” because they were so reliable with young children. In fact, “Pete the Pup,” the children’s friend from the old TV series “Our Gang,” was a pit bull.

Unfortunately, there are Pit Bulls that are the product of bad breeding because, well, there are a lot of very stupid people in the world. The good news is that this never has been, and is not now the standard of the breed. The biggest problem that I have seen with any breed of dog is the owners, not the dog. Everything from simply not knowing anything about dogs and how the should be raised to intentionally ruining an otherwise good dog. I have long said that I am fully in favor of trying to rehabilitate such dogs, and putting the owners down! Such people are a menace to other dog owners and society as a whole.

And just for the record, I'm not really a fan of Pits (I prefer Rottweilers, another misunderstood breed) I have never owned one, but have met far more wonderful, friendly family oriented Pit Bulls than I have aggressive and dangerous ones. This even includes counting the ones that I get to deal with in my duties in law enforcement, where it seems that we come across no shortage of aggressive dogs being used by the local thugs to either project a tough guy image or actively protect a property.
