****WCGreen Update -- Sunday, July 27, 2014****

From his wife:

A new Christopher Green update:

Yesterday I got a strange text from Chris, then my phone rang.. It said it was Chris, but the person on the other end was talking! i asked who it was? IT WAS CHRIS!!!!!!! He was a little froggy, but my darling man was talking! I could not get ready and race ti the hospital without crying tears of joy! It was a wondefrul day!

It turns out it is a fairly simple thing to transform his trac. Why didn't they do this before?

6. They put in a fenestrated trach fairly soon

but don't close it until they're sure his airway will be protected. Even then, he'll probably be nonverbal at night, when he goes to sleep. If he wakes up, he'll stick a finger on the trach opening if he needs to tell staff anything.

The next step will be leaving it buttoned at night and then it will be pulled.

He's had a very rough postop course. That's why they didn't do this sooner.

9. You mean they put a speaking tube on his trach for a bit so he could talk?

A person has to be able to breath well enough on their own before doing this. Glad he got to talk, it is a great thing.

17. Excellent news! Sounds like he had a Speech Pathology assessment for a Passy-Muir speaking valve:

Invented by a patient named David Muir, the Passy-MuirŪTracheostomy & Ventilator Swallowing and Speaking Valve is a simple medical device used by tracheostomy and ventilator patients. When placed on the hub of the tracheostomy tube or in-line with the ventilator circuit, the Passy-Muir Valve redirects air flow through the vocal folds, mouth and nose enabling voice and improved communication. Years of evidence-based research has shown that the Passy-Muir Valve offers patients numerous clinical benefits beyond communication, including:

Voice/Speech Production
Improved swallowing
Secretion management
Oxygenation
Restores positive airway pressure
In-line Ventilator Use & Interchangeability
Weaning
Decannulation
Olfaction
Infection Control
Pediatric Speech/Language Development
Quality of Life
