15-year-old girl arrested for beheading classmate in Sasebo (JAPAN)

SASEBO JAPAN—

Police in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, said Sunday they have arrested a 15-year-old high school girl on suspicion of killing a classmate.

According to police, the victim, Aiwa Matsuo, also 15, was visiting the suspect at her apartment when the incident occurred at around 8 p.m. Saturday. TBS quoted police as saying the suspect struck Matsuo on the back of the head more than 10 times with a blunt instrument and strangled her as well. Police said Matsuo’s head had been severed with a large knife and her left hand cut off.

At around 11 p.m., Matsuo’s parents contacted police after their daughter failed to return home. She had told them earlier that she was going to her friend’s place and texted them at about 7 p.m. to say she was about to leave for home.

Police found Matsuo’s body early Sunday morning, lying on the suspect’s bed.

Do they try them as "adults"? Do they typically offer mental illness defenses?

I believe Japan is one of the few countries that still have the death sentence, but not saying this will happen to her. She will probably end up in some kind of psychiatric hospital but who knows.

Their names are never publicized in newspapers.

This is very similar to the "Jun-kun Satsujin Jiken" incident that happened in Kobe in 1997-- a 14-year-old chopped off the head of an 11-year-old (and killed another kid, and seriously wounded 3 others), and the perpetrator was sentenced to juvenile hall until reaching the age of 20. However, his family were ordered to pay restitution to the families of his victims.

That makes more sense. I've heard of high school students living alone when they get into a good school that's far from home. The family would have to be pretty well-off to afford it I would think.

She took her victim shopping first. I think she was going to cut up the body to dispose of it but it was too much work. I just watched "Rear Window" the other night. "How do you even start to cut up a human body?" Yuck yuck yuck yuck.
