Japanese fans speak on evolution of 'Godzilla

TOKYO —

Japanese fans want it known: The radiation-breathing, skyscraper-stomping monster they call “Gojira” was born right here in Japan, 60 years ago.

No matter its evolution in Hollywood over the decades, the Godzilla creature began as an icon for the suffering brought by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.

The new remake, directed by hard-core Godzilla aficionado Gareth Edwards, has become one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters this year and finally opened in Japan on Friday.

The Associated Press spoke with some Japanese about their views on how their favorite mutated reptile has changed, including whether they welcome the latest rendition in full computer-graphic glory — so different from their Godzilla, that actor in a rubber suit, who waded into pools and smashed miniature models.

Just watched it a few weeks ago (and have seen all of them including the newest one) - you just can't beat the original. Better acting, better storyline. Some of the others were well done too but I was surprised how much I enjoyed the original, subtitles and all (but then, I have a fondness for old b&w films).

The ones in the 90's were the worst, like something made for they syfy channel. Just cheesy.

it has not been possible to explain the range of feelings experienced. The way people looked at me and avoided me was unlike any other time in my life.

Not knowing the origins of Godzilla until now tells me that I was the incarnation of Godzilla that day. And even though I was with friends I felt alone.
