I would say he strikes a nice balance if you watch to the end. I was also the one who posted the thread on Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on GMO's and while I mostly agree with Tyson, I felt he simplified things way too much and came across as talking down to folks with legitimate concerns and suspicions of companies like Monsanto. Concerns I myself have. This is a very complicated topic and really deserves at least an hour to look at all the pros and cons. You don't get an hour with Nye but at least you get to look at some of the complexities of the issue.
Yes, Nye and Tyson are not experts in the field but who here is? The second video points out that 1/3rd of all studies on GMO's were done by independent researchers, not just those with an interest in profits from them.

(20,886 posts)It's only at the 23 or 24 minute mark he hits on the ecological repercussions. And that is what concerns most of us.
But the woo warriors will duck that argument every time. Wait, they'll be here soon to call you a Luddite and science-denier.

(15,429 posts)Almost no sweet corn is GMO (sweet corn farmers refuse to grow it). Sweet corn is an almost insignificant portion of total corn production and almost ALL field corn is GMO.
The fish/tomato GMO was never economically viable. Nobody would buy it. Good thing, too. My wife is allergic to fish and there are concerns about thse sorts of transgenic modifications (wait until a peanut gene becomes something that will make a dollar!).
You can cut the hybridization process down to 1/3 under artificial lighting indoors. Underground cannabis breeders would go through three to four generations per year in their indoor breeding programs.
There is no such thing as GMO brocolli that has different flavors.
GMO Papaya is about the only economically viable form of fresh produce GMO. I do not eat papaya.
He ignores the economic realities where GMO seeds have bankrupted farmers in third world nations.
Golden Rice, though a wonderful step forward, is economically unviable in third world nations due to the patent and other issues.
Shilled for corporations at 10:52.
Shilled for Monsanto at 12:56.
Fails to state that no product can be labeled Certified Organic if it contains GMO food.
Fails to tell you if you buy Certified Organic versions of food, you will NOT get GMO food.
It's all bad in many people's eyes because of Monsanto, not because it may have harmful effects.
More Monsanto shilling at 20:00.
Actually was questioning problems correctly at 20:45.
Actually gets into REAL beneficial aspects and potential of GMOs at 21:45.
Actually pointed out some of the ecological issues towards the end.
