OK trooper tells local news: Best way not to get raped by cops is to follow the law

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol official reportedly told women that the best way not to get raped by an officer was to follow the law.
In recent months, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer and an Oklahoma City Police officer have been accused of repeatedly raping women, often during traffic stops.
After a Tulsa County sheriffs deputy was arrested last week for sexually assaulting a woman while responding to a 911 call, Tulsa NBC News affiliate KJRH decided to ask the Oklahoma Highway Patrol how to stay safe during a traffic stop.
The department noted that troopers should always be in uniform, and that women were allowed to keep their car door locked, and to speak with officers through a cracked window. A trooper should rarely ask a person to come back to the patrol car, OHP advised.
There are certain situations where we do that, Capt. George Brown told KJRH. If someone doesnt have a drivers license on their person. We asked for an ID or drivers licence, if they cant provide it, rather than stand outside the car writing [a ticket], which puts us in a bad location, we may ask a female back to the car so we can get her information.
The KJRH anchor said that Brown concluded with this advice: The captain says anything that happens inside a troopers car is videotaped, and he says that supervisors do review those tapes.
He says the best tip that he can give is to follow the law in the first place so you dont get pulled over, the anchor added.
Brown told KWTV that OHP was working to regain the publics trust.
There are entirely more good officers than there are the few bad apples that exist out there, and we want people to know that, he explained. We have a lot of good troopers, a lot of good officers out there doing a lot of good things daily, and we want to continue that and have the public continue their trust in us.

(14,733 posts)The 'best' way to do it would be to vet your cops better, and not hire sociopaths and rapists.
Saying it's only safe to talk to Oklahoma police through a cracked window is pretty damn sad. And what do you do when the cop asks you to step outside? If you refuse, suddenly they've got 'grounds' (or at least will say they do) to drag you out and cuff you, and maybe even arrest you.
You're not going to 'regain the public's trust' by telling them the best way to 'stay safe' from police assault is simply not to interact with police.
rock
(13,218 posts)would be to require that the cops be castrated. I'm pretty sure that would work.

(13,218 posts)To the idea: how convenient it would be for the women. Perhaps the GOP would like to adopt it to show how they do support women's issues!

So, is he saying that rapist-cops are just displaying "tough-love" on law-breaking women?

(17,184 posts)You know, I bet that idiot has no idea he just uttered one of the most fatuous remarks in the history of mankind.
I also like the "bad apples" part, standard apologetics 101. Somehow, I think abusing power to rape women is more than just a "bad apple" activity. And even if we stipulate it is so, why are you not doing something to excise those bad apples?

(36,446 posts)This is no different than telling women, don't wear provocative clothing, don't go out alone at night, don't talk to strangers, don't drive over the speed limit. If you do any of these things and get raped, then it's your fault.
I'm sick of rape culture & I'm sick to death of our definition of masculinity.

(13,598 posts)This is not "wicked cop implies being raped is victim's fault if they were breaking law", it's "Cop is asked for advice on best way to behave during traffic stop, and trots out boilerplate response, part of which is slightly unfortunate in context".
If he didn't belong to a profession that a significant number of leftwingers love to hate, this wouldn't even get noticed.
He did not, of course, "tell women that the best way not to get raped by an officer was to follow the law. ". What he said was "The best way to stay safe is to follow the law so that you don't get pulled over in the first place" - which is undeniably a slightly regrettable thing to say in that context, but in general is sound advice.

(2,345 posts)but here in the U.S., the police are charged with enforcing the law, not inflicting punishment on perceived lawbreakers. The latter, at least theoretically, is what our judicial system is for.

(26,549 posts)This is saying that it is up to the woman to prevent being raped - if she only hadn't broken traffic laws, she wouldn't have been raped by a police officer.
As if a police officer that has decided to rape a woman would only do so if she broke a traffic law. He'd rape her, but he won't pull her over on a false pretext.
Damn those leftwingers for thinking that "protect and serve" isn't just a mindless slogan!

Until there is an effort to weed the rotten apples out of police departments, they will all be judged by the behavior of the most corrupt and brutal among them.
This guy doesn't seem to get that.
And BTW, it isn't just cops, no profession does an adequate job of self policing. Doctors, lawyers, you name it, even teachers are overly protective of the few that give them a bad name. I guess it's "there but for the grace of god go I" or something, but it's pervasive and it's wrong.

(46,436 posts)Several years ago I was working overtime in the law office late at night on a big project that was due. I headed home about 2:00 a.m. to my then home in Eagle River about 10 miles out. Out on the highway, I noticed a car following me closely for some distance, which kind of freaked me out. Finally, he flipped on his lights and pulled me over. I was doing absolutely nothing wrong, which he admitted. He said he was just wondering what I was doing out so late - as if it was any of his business. I explained I was coming home from work, and he let me go without incident, but it still kind of pissed me off. If I had been driving erratically or something and he wanted to see if I was inebriated, fine, but I was following the speed limit, driving straight and there was NO reason for him to stop me.
We did have a highly decorated cop here who was busted for rape a few years ago for sexually assaulting women right at the station. Sick...

(9,527 posts)He said the best way to avoid being pulled over was to follow the law. Not that the best way to avoid being raped was to follow the law.
This is a bullshit headline designed to gin up outrage rather than actually report news accurately.

It went on for years.
