'Republican being accused of being anti women." This was in response to my re-posting a quote from Eliizabeth Warren, calling out the Republican party for their anti women votes.
Here is my response how did I do?
You are a friend, I respect and admire. You are a talented artist both of words and images. You are also a compassionate person both to humans and to animals. Know I do not personally believe that every individual Republican is anti-woman.
The thing is every single Republican in Congress, and I mean every single one voted against equal pay for equal work, to me that is just unfair. It goes beyond party affiliation. It goes to the pledge of allegiance: "with liberty and justice for ALL" shouldn't be just words we speak without meaning them."
Yes I understand companies sometimes spend lots of money training women who then leave to become a stay at home parent, thus causing a loss of investment. The same thing can be said though of a man who develops an illness, gets a better offer, or decides to move to an area where that company doesn't have a branch. It's not a valid excuse for injustice. Neither is" it will raise the cost of goods", so will a man's pay increase. Will laws change discriminatory behavior, no, but at least it gives those discriminated against a tool to fight back against it. I will vote for any politician on either side of the aisle who proves to me through their votes that they are willing to to honor the pledge, period. I will never believe that a woman should be paid less than a man for doing the same job. I don't view it as"playing the victim card' but rather as speaking out for basic fairness. When the Republican party as a whole demonstrates through action that they at least are willing to consider that it is unfair no matter the lame justifications and excuses, I will vote for them, but until then I can't and won't apologize for calling them out on their vote, and voting for people who will cast their votes in Congress for equal pay for equal work.

(28,151 posts)is that, by keeping temper in check, you avoided putting in a satisfying barb that could serve as a handy distraction to focus on and thus avoid addressing the point of your post.
Not always easy but it's when we keep emotion in check we're so much more likely to make an unassailable argument.

(748 posts)... they might stick around longer instead of getting the hell out of your crappy-wage job as soon as they have a kid. They might weigh their careers more heavily in the calculus of which spouse moves for which spouse's next career move.
Instead, these people prefer sexist, self-fulfilling prophecies.
Liberalynn
(7,549 posts)I am not saying I expect men to be sexist. I know there are plenty who aren't. It's just really sad to know that there are women who believe they themselves should be treated as lesser than instead of being equal to.
How can anyone not view being paid less for doing the exact same thing as being valued less?"
It's common sense.

(37,364 posts)to point out that the goods and services that women purchase are not discounted for gender--they cost the same as what a man must pony up at the cash register. Many women support families by themselves, and sometimes that is the case with two parents being in the home.

(12,504 posts)I had 3 children while working, I get paid a decent wage, and without bragging too much am an integral part of this machine and have been approached several times over that I should reconsider retiring and stay on to bump up that retirement package.
So mine is one example where the justification for different pay scales falls flat on it's face. I should be paid less because I may have children? Really? I am one of millions that work through pregnancy and return to work after having a child. I'm not special.
There are definitely jobs out there fit for part timers, school kids and people who do NOT want to make long term committements to any employer, but that has NOTHING to do with gender. Those jobs are likely never going to be high paying and are likley fairly equally applied via gender.
But back to my scenario, perhpas "they" could explain one more time how birthing children is a detriment that requires lesser wages for the rest of my life?

(7,549 posts)The majority of women do go back to work! Plus if maternity leave etc was the real concern then why still pay women who are past their child bearing years less too?

(276 posts)First you tell your friend how much you value her and this explains why you are willing to take the trouble to have this difficult conversation with her. That is always a good way to start a dialogue between two friends who disagree. You continue that tone calmly with facts and keep your temper in check again out of respect. I hope to see more of this kind of constructive dialogue here!
