Peaceful protests against IS in Syria and Iraq organized by Kurdish nationals in several German cities ended with serious clashes with pro-jihadist Muslims in Hamburg and Celle. Police had to request reinforcements to restore order.
Police in Hamburg, a port city of 1.8 million people, used water cannons, batons and pepper spray late Tuesday to disperse crowds of warring Kurds and pro-jihadist Muslims, armed with knives and brass-knuckles, following a protest against Islamic State militants who are attacking the Kurdish town of Kobani in Syria near the Turkish border.

(17,469 posts)or its equivalent, why would I waste my time? Questioning an unreliable source is hardly "weak", it is the foundation of critical thinking.

(14,549 posts)They were met on the Steindamm road in the St. Georg area by about 400 Muslims who police said were probably Salafists.
As members of the two groups began fighting at around 11pm, the police blocked off all roads to the mosque and placed their vehicles between the groups to try and calm the violence.
Demonstrators in both groups brought metal bars, machetes and sharp objects to the fight and police decided to deploy water cannons after midnight to separate them.

(22,920 posts)and almost gave up, but I want to be prepared for the onslaught of comments and questions in case there's any truth to it.
I found this Reuters' piece:

I don't know if Reuters is considered biased any more or not.
BBC has a piece, too: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29530640
Some 400 Kurdish protesters fought with a similar number of radical Muslims, police told German media. Demonstrators, some carrying knives and knuckle-dusters, were eventually separated by police firing water cannon.
Injuries were also reported after violence involving members of the Yazidi religious group, most of whom are Kurds, and ethnic Chechens in the town of Celle in Lower Saxony.

(13,184 posts)Yeah, I know they're a right-wing rag. But they also seem to have a hellacious news operation, covering lots of stuff that the US media doesn't seem to get to--even in the US. Plus, they always have lots of pics and videos.
Anyway, here's a link:

I think the Hamburg violence merited a line or two on CNN and the BBC.
Unlike RT, the Mail's reporting suggests it was Kurds attacking a Salafist mosque...

(16,191 posts)It's a lot like Al Jazeera. Their coverage of general world events is quite good, and some of the investigative work is very impressive, but it was a propaganda piece for the Qatari government during the Doha protests, and its reporting consistently supports the Emir when it's talking about Middle Eastern politics.
I'd never take an Al Jazeera article at face value if it was reporting on the Syrian war (the Emir supports specific rebel factions, and their reporting bias reflects that), and I'd never take an RT article at face value if the subject involves Russia (you can bet money that it will always be pro-Putin). The rest of the time, however, they both tend to be quite reliable and FAR more neutral than our American media outlets.
