Of course, gun extremists did not respond kindly to the Kroger campaign. What follows is a recounting of their disturbing tactics, from the shocking intimidation and harassment of unsuspecting commenters on Krogers Facebook page to right-wing media propaganda that disingenuously portrayed Kroger as being allies of the gun extremists.
Secret Facebook groups such as People Who Were Blocked by Moms Demand Action Demand Action Now which has well over a thousand members disseminated gun rights propaganda and helped orchestrate attacks on individuals commenting on Krogers page. Some gun nuts combed the profile pages of people commenting in support of gun reform, harvested personal photos of them and Photoshopped them to include obscene or humiliating comments, before reposting the photos on Krogers page, or on other social media sites. Because Kroger frequently bans users who post that kind of content, the gun extremists created disposable fake accounts sometimes using the name and profile photo of an opponent to quickly dump posts without being held accountable.
In one case, they found a photo of a womans preschool-age child and wrote on it, My mom sucks more cock than Richard Simmons and circulated it online. In another case, they grabbed a photo of a mother and her child and wrote Big retard, little retard on it before reposting it. One woman posted to Kroger a photograph of a receipt showing money she spent elsewhere, and gun extremists swarmed her post, with hundreds of responses, including comments like what you could do is shut your god damned whore mouth, calm your tits, and fuck her right in the pussy, which Krogers Facebook admin allowed to stand over a day later.
Some of the gun extremists targets regularly do battle with them online; others never expected such a response when they posted a message to Kroger and are alarmed and intimidated. One woman who was the target of a Photoshopped image told me that she considered shutting down her Facebook account over the reaction to her post on Krogers page. The gun extremists goal seems to be to mob individuals until they are scared into silence, and in some cases it is working.

Hosts: please note that this is not a local story about gun crime. Among other things, the article illustrates the issue of using the internet to harass and intimidate (similar to what we have seen recently surrounding GamerGate).

You could ask those folks what its like, I suppose.
Why don't you ask them how they feel about the John Crawford shooting, while you're at it.

What do you think about phoning in to the cops when a kid handles a BB gun in a store? Some here advocate that. Can you think how that can go wrong?

Signed legislation expanding Californias so-called revenge porn bill to include selfies.
Existing law makes it a misdemeanor to post online private graphic pictures or footage of someone with the intention of humiliating them.
Senate Bill 1255, by Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres, expands the prohibition to include sexually explicit images that are meant to be private, regardless who created the image.
Brown also signed Assembly Bill 2643, by Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, that permits a person whose sexually explicit image is posted online without his or her consent to bring a civil action against the person posting the image.

(38,304 posts)These open carry fools would be shot, beat up by police, or have their guns stolen or confiscated.
My mom is wild west. I've seen her take guns away from people she considers fools.
In the U.S.A. open carry is only safe in places where it's entirely unnecessary.
Carrying a gun openly simply cries out, "I am a fearful weenie!!!"
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)All of Multnomah County, in fact. Oregon permits open carry, but there's no state preemption for it; cities and counties can prohibit open carry if they see fit. Given that Oregon is a "must issue" CCW state (and that is preempted), there is no real need to change this situation. People who choose to carry a gun for protection will overwhelmingly choose to carry concealed. Open carriers are doing so to protest, to make a (stupidly counterproductive) political statement.

(95,337 posts)I see these people in Suburbia USA all frightened to death that they need to walk around with their guns. Yet I live in a city that has a pretty decent crime rate although in one of the safer neighborhoods. Those gun nuts are fools that wouldn't last 15 minutes in some of the neighborhoods here in Wilmington.
I remember when some gun nut from Houston Texas thought it would be neat to do an open carry march through the Fifth Ward of Houston, which is not one of the safer neighborhoods in Houston. Thankfully someone was smart enough to realize that would be a trainwreck waiting to happen. It's one thing to do it at your surburbia grocery store but to do open carry in a high crime rate neighborhood is just trouble waiting to happen.

For example, if you live some place with the possibility of cougar or bear encounters, carrying a gun while out and about isn't a terrible idea. I had a friend who lived in the California hills who always carried when out in the sticks. He needed to use the gun twice. In both cases, a warning shot was all that was necessary to deter the cougar.

(10,164 posts)With the exception of extremely rural places where it's commonplace, open carry is a really dumb idea. It's a dumb idea for protection: advertising that you have a gun is probably less of a deterrent than it is an invitation ("I have something valuable and useful to a criminal" and a warning ("Better take that guy out first...he's got a gun" . Why give up the element of surprise and make yourself a high-priority target?
Open carry as a form of protest is even dumber. It's very similar to Critical Mass bike rides in that regard: it has the exact opposite effect on people who encounter it than the protesters intend. In places where open carry is uncommon (which is most of the country), people tend to react with alarm, concern, or even anger to someone carrying. Frightening or annoying people doesn't often bring them around to your point of view!
Stupid...

(95,337 posts)Sure, I'll call someone a numnuts. I'll even reply to a post and call someone an idiot and that person might call the same back to me. This happens on these forums on the internet.
But I would never ever EVER steal personal photos of someone and do disrespectful things like these assholes are doing. I would never drag someone's child into an argument to protect my rights!
If I was defending my right to choose, my right to vote, my right to marry the person that I love, or even my right to carry a gun into a store - I have so many other ways to defend those rights without doing something so absolutely low and insulting such as these gun nuts are doing.
I respect the right for people to own guns but I also have the right to be able to shop at my local grocery store without wondering if that guy carrying an automatic rifle is just a gun enthusiast or some crazy off his meds wanting to go human hunting. I shouldn't have to live my life in fear and smart gun owners respect that and leave their weapons at home or carry something small enough as to not frighten those people around them.

(4,459 posts)The John Crawford tragedy was the result of idiots who couldn't tell the difference between a kid playing with a toy - or more likely could tell and just wanted to start some shit - compounded by over-reactive cops who shot first and covered up later.
But that single example doesn't mean we have to put up with morons who threaten the peace. If I see someone open carrying in the Kroger, I know:
1. They are making a political statement, not really afraid for their life. Kroger is not a high crime area.
2. People who think its a good idea to intimidate others with the threat of death as a political statement are more likely to be a little unhinged. They WANT someone to start something with them. They're itching for it.
3. They are not very smart. If that particular Kroger IS, in fact, a place dangerous enough to justify being armed, it is much smarter to CC. OC means you're advertising that you're ready for a confrontation, not trying to avoid one.
4. Their actions have intentionally created a potentially life threatening situation. Either another gun carrier might confront them, or possibly the cops will arrive and confront them. I don't want to get caught up in the crossfire of their 2nd A rights.
5. Exiting the building and calling the cops is the ONLY rational thing I can think of. If you have another suggestion, I'm open to hearing it.

(15,396 posts)I had to take a double take just to notice it. The holster matched his belt and shirt color and the jeans were dark. I know for a fact 90% or more of the folks never even noticed a finely crafted 1911 on his side.
I walked by the gun (60 ish) and his wife with my LCP in my right pocket.
This is how OC should be, neat normal (non-tactical) dress, carrying a normal (not SKS / longgun) personal protective device. Of course this was in WV where folks aren't skeert of firearms.
