1. "Lesson is repeated until it is learned", or, how westerners misunderstand karma

I've seen a lot of "oh I hope there's karma so Dick Cheney comes back as a 3rd world kid".

Nope.

The idea behind karma is that Dick Cheney will keep coming back, again and again, exactly as what he is, until he finally gets it right.

Or worse, "cosmic justice." Bleagh.

So did Paul, oddly enough ("let each work out his own salvation with fear and trembling".)

Karma, per se, simply means "doing" or "holding" or "making"... it's the extent to which one is bound by his own actions and clutchings to the illusion of self.
