George W. Bush: Garner decision 'hard to understand'

By Eric Bradner, CNN
updated 12:54 PM EST, Fri December 5, 2014

Washington (CNN) -- Former President George W. Bush says a New York grand jury's decision not to indict the police officer who choked and killed Eric Garner was "hard to understand."

In an interview with CNN's Candy Crowley, Bush said his reaction to watching video of the incident that led to Garner's death was "how sad."

"You know, the verdict was hard to understand," he said. "But I hadn't seen all the details -- but it's sad that race continues to play such an emotional, divisive part of life."

Bush said the United States has improved since the 1970s, when he was young, and said he remembers "race riots with cities being burned." Bush discussed the recent racial unrest that followed a Missouri grand jury's failure to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, who is white, in the shooting death of Michael Brown, who was black, over dinner with his former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Cheney was the real sociopath in that administration IMO.

I never thought of him as the hard-core racist that many in his party are. He was controlled.

The Bush's seem more classist than racist. If you're rich and black, they will welcome you more than if you are poor and white.

problem surrounding himself with the John Ashcrofts of the world. We all remember how he came close to ''winning'' FL. It was done over the backs and civil rights of many black and brown people.

But I never bought the "he hates black people" line that Kanye West and others claimed.

I think he hated poor people, though, regardless of color. Rich, black Repukes like Condi Rice and Colin Powell were among his closest friends.

This dope doesn't understand much, so what's the big interview, Candy?… no surprise there. Least of all, does he understand civil rights or anything that deals with what made this country thrive as injustices continued towards those building our country.

The only thing that's improved since the 70's is Bush's nasal septum.
