violent, misogynistic, and an absolutely brilliant masterpiece.

I listened to Dr. Dre's The Chronic today for the first time in decades. I had forgotten how incredible it is. I had also forgotten how violentl and sexist it is. I make no apologies for liking it because it isn't a conscious choice. It appeals to me sonically. It just does. What works of art do you find apealing despite a noxious message?

The Irish Ballad

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park

The Old Dope Peddler

The Masochism Tango

Be Prepared

Come to think of it I may like Lehrer because of his message rather than in spite of it.

Unlike many other SS officers, Wernher von Braun was never tried for war crimes. Instead, he was whisked away from Germany and became a leader in the US space program.

"Smack my Bitch Up" - great song; awful, violent lyrics...but I still like it

I also like "Baby Got Back," which I'm sure is offensive to some people. 36-24-36? Only if she's 5'3"...

But I just really like the music and beat of the song. I neither "like" nor "approve of" the lyrics; I tolerate them because I dig the other elements of the song. It would be better if the lyrics just repeated "change my pitch up" throughout, but I didn't write it.

In all honesty, I often ignore song lyrics in favor of the instrumental aspects of the music (I listen to a lot of death metal - oy!).

I can't back The Chronic or eminem but I've screamed my voice off to these lyrics and at face value it's incredibly misogynistic but is actually a direct assault to how assholes treat women.

I-Spy 'just between friends'
Lyrics:
"I've got my hands up her dress and it means nothing. It's not about love, it's not even about sex. this time it feels like i've got control. at this time tomorrow i'll be able to look back and call her a slut. We wondering who could fuck her first, another point for me. I know my friends will be so proud of me. Just between friends. How come they want to separate? They've got all the rights that me and my buddy's do. You talk about degradation. You stupid bitches havn't got a clue. We were wondering who would fuck her first. Another point for me. I know my friends will be so proud of me. Just between friends...."
When someone thinks like this and the attitude spreads our dream is dead.

"Every Breath You Take" the Police. I'll be watching you ...

"Good Morning Little School Girl" by many blues artists. Going home with a schoolgirl to have sex.

"Boom Boom Out Go the Lights" Little Walter and a later hit for Pat Travers. A song about searching for your girlfriend so you can knock her out.

He makes heroes out of degenerate criminals, but you just can't help getting into it if you have any kind of guts yourself. To say a movie like "Goodfellas" is seductive would be the understatement of a century - the violence is aestheticized with brilliant music choices and cinematography. The real guys it's based on were worthless garbage who didn't merit a single moment of that movie, but the movie is powerful nonetheless.

One of the first things I thought of when I read this post was Stanley Kubrick films. For the most part, I love them, and yet, there's a pretty strong misogynistic current running through many of them. While I am bothered by it, it hasn't killed my appreciation for his work. Kubrick really was brilliant. If he were a lesser artist or if the content were more heinous, I'm guessing it would tip the scales and I wouldn't consider it worth looking past the objectionable aspects.

As a rule I have difficulty separating the artist from the art. For example, if I know someone is a political conservative, I can almost never get past that. I'm somewhat more forgiving about transgressions from the distant past. If you recognize my username, you'll know I'm an H.P. Lovecraft fan (actually more a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos writers who followed him, but still...) Lovecraft's work contains some horrifically racist passages. I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me.

On one hand, the last thing I want is for artists to be constrained by pressure to conform to some arbitrary standard of positive messaging - talk about a surefire way to destroy creative expression - no way. On the other hand, sometimes an artist crosses a line I can't go beyond. I'm a big horror fan so my line tends to be pretty far out there (don't even get me started on erroneous negative presumptions about horror fans) but I do have a line. I tend to take these things on a case by case basis and context matters a lot.

Not really violent, I'll grant you.

But "misogynistic, and an absolutely brilliant masterpiece."?
