Granted it was born in some kind of hate -- or maybe just juvenile stupidity, but I don't think that scratching someone's door rises to the level of "hate crime." It's like calling anything you don't like "rape." It really cheapens the word for when it does apply. This is petty vandalism at worst. I think it's better to save "hate crime" for instances where people are either physically assaulted or put in fear for their life and safety. Equating that with keying someone's door pretty much dulls the effect of the term when it's really warranted.

But I hasten to add this is an effect brought on by the CONservatives engaging in several chronic behaviors: hyperbolic speech (way over the top) and seeing everything (and I am NOT being hyperbolic here) in extreme black and white tones with no middle ground.

If someone scrawls the "N-Word" on my front door, would that be a hate crime or petty vandalism?

So the residents have no fear for their safety? If I came home to find such a thing on my front door, I'd be concerned for our safety.

There's no reason to attach a "level of offense" to the term hate crime. Hate crime is explaining why they did the criminal act. Not what the criminal act was.

into another category. Personalized bigoted slurs shows motivation beyond simple vandalism and moves it into hate crime.

Please clarify what you meant about calling anything you don't like rape, thank you.

That's exactly what it was meant to do.

of a black family would it still be just "petty vandalism"?

I don't think you understand the reason for categorizing certain crimes as "hate crimes".
