Well, it's been 2 days since the #?NYPDslowdown (search it on Twitter) started and the city hasn't burst into flames. Even though last night was one of the biggest parties of the year. I guess New Yorkers don't need as much "policing" as the Powers That Be thought they did.
And I'm guessing that goes the same for much of the rest of the country.
Of course, policing isn't meant to protect the citizenry from each other. It's meant to protect the 1% from ne're do wells like Occupy (Anything).
And please note the stunning lack of news coverage on the work stoppage. If people realize that the whole bread and puppets circus is a show, that might lead to a whole host of "unwanted" consequences. Less profit for the for profit prisons. Less bureaucracy and the attendant paychecks.
Hell, protestors might even be emboldened to protest anywhere they choose. Outside the studios of Fox News or the NY Times or the headquarters of any of the other boot licking minions.

(9,001 posts)according to the NYPD they aren't making "unnecessary" arrests. Arrests are down 66%. Which logically suggests they are making 66% MORE ARRESTS THAN NECESSARY.

(1,232 posts)it's primarily about 'solving' (let's write reports!) crimes such as stolen cars, break-ins, assault, domestic violence, etc. The shake-downs of pedestrians and drivers aren't about preventing crime at all, it's more like basic harassment than anything else. It's a broken system.
Popping some kid for carrying a couple of joints in his pocket and effectively ruining his life with a silly conviction does nothing more than create criminals and a perpetual life of poverty and possible subsequent criminal activity to 'survive'. Modern policing is definitely not effective at preventing crime, so maybe people will wake up finally and our legal system can start making some big changes.
In fact, I think we can look to the White House for the next two years, and I'm willing to bet that this President might just take advantage of this opportunity to start some interesting changes. He's a smart guy and will do what he can to start the ball rolling. He knows an opportunity when he sees one!
