Definitely notable. 35 straight days of protest, mostly under the rubric of Ferguson, and justice.
Protests not only in NYC, but other cities, AND in other countries.
And very well coordinated.
Twitter and Facebook is where the information, news and communication is happening.
The intertubes have changed the face of revolution.
Edited to add:
Excellent summation of the new protest movement here, and why it is different than the movements of the 60's/70's.
The Birth of a New Civil Rights Movement
2014 was an epochal year for social justice. 2015 could be even more dramatic.

(93,847 posts)Frequent, maybe. But today in small numbers.
Plenty of coverage in the days following the Ferguson and Staten Island killings when there was volume to be reported on.

(12,693 posts)And how they are "heroes" for all the hard work they're doing to "keep us safe" throughout this apparently extraordinarily dangerous holiday season.
Boxing day was always the scariest one for me.

It seems some groups have co-opted the original intent and message of "Black Lives Matter".
When I see a small protest and half the signs have REVCOM written on the bottom
I tend to not pay attention to that protest of mainly college age kids, most white that is
to me anyway sending a completely different message.
I could understand them in maybe a pro-cuban relations movement, but not the Ferguson, STL and NYC movements. For me it muddles the message enough I stop paying attention to them. Especially the Oakland and Berkely CA crowd.
You don't really see any coverage anymore. Have to get it all from twitter and youtube now.

(33 posts)There are no mass protests. They're very small. Like I predicted the New Years eve one died out quickly in NY. It's pretty much over.

(11,481 posts)I guess we'll see. I DO expect this one to morph into a more inclusive social movement against the entire system though. Too many activists are beginning to connect the dots between oppression and the system that encourages it, i.e., capitalism. And not just Classic Red activists too, although they are in the vanguard of the "connecting the dots" education. Activists who wouldn't or haven't ever considered themselves "Reds" are beginning to see that Marx was right.
There's been a pretty straight line progression from the Wisconsin protests to the Occupy protests to this new one against police violence. And they followed on each other's heels. I don't expect that to stop until the oppression stops. And since it's capitalism, I don't expect the oppression to stop until capitalism is no more.
Every movement has been more militant than the last and I expect that to continue also.

(39,215 posts)I thought it was very interesting and it is not just talking about another recession or a Great Depression. Given the mess we are in now with no regulations for the banksters and the corporations this would not surprise me.
But as he is talking I think he forgot another part of the equation: Climate Change. Here in the USA one of the things that is going to raise hell with our present system is the drought in the SE (and the rising of the water level in the SE.) Add to that the food shortages and poverty that will come out of this and you are going to see one very angry bunch of Americans. Ordinary Americans.
And all we have to confront the situation are a bunch of Rs who could care less and don't have any idea what to do about it anyhow. That alone could bring about Hartmann's 80 year event. The crisis of the era. The WI protests, Occupy and the civil rights movement of today are out there for everyone to see what must be done.
This new year is going to be one interesting year. Hope we survive through it.

(39,215 posts)experience and a father who was self taught. Being quite a bit older than a lot of our posters I wonder if I should not just shut up. I am aware that the knowledge of the FDR-JFK days is often out of touch with what is going on today.
I absolutely love DU and its members as they keep me thinking and they care.

History and wisdom are hand in hand, IMHO.

(11,481 posts)is why it's so important to connect those dots. Because if we don't get it right and raise the consciousness of those angry ordinary Americans we could EASILY wind up with an especially virulent and open form of American fascism as a response. That's the "barbarism part of "socialism or barbarism" which is the choice we are facing today.

(11,481 posts)I'm getting on up there in years as is my wife. She's got some health problems (controllable IF she has medicines and IF we can afford the medicines), so it's not going to be any sort of picnic no matter the final outcome. I'm actually trying to keep a stash of food and immediate needs for about six weeks, just in case the shit hits the fan in my lifetime.
I just hope that is enough, but then again it should be. As outspoken as I am EVERYWHERE, I doubt that I live through it, but I do worry about my wife and kids.

And at this point, that is where most people get their news anyhow.

(6,281 posts)11:30 or so on one of the major downtown street. 40-50 people walking in the street with bullhorns and protest signs painted on bedsheets. Traffic was backing up behind them like crazy. There were a few drivers upset but it seem like most were just driving slow and going with the flow. We were walking. When we got to the corner (that the protesters had just passed) there were 2-3 police cars and cops just hanging around. They didn't seem to be too concerned about the protest march or the ensuing traffic issues.
No sign of media. No real interest from most of the people walking on the sidewalk to get to NYE events. Just another night in Detroit I guess.

(60,010 posts)I suspect the police had much more on their minds than a group of protesters.
I am cheered by the fact that while there may be "small" groups out, there continue to be groups out, all this time, for 35 days.
I am cheered by the fact this is a young people's movement, by and large, and they resist having the "professional" movement leaders like
sharpton and Jesse Jackson show up and take over.
In the article I linked to there is coverage of what happened when Sharpton decided to be a "leader" of the movement.
