A Florida deputy has been charged with theft after he was accused of repeatedly stealing from a Coral Springs Walmart while he was in uniform.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said that 51-year-old Theodore Parrish stole $176 worth of merchandise. And according to a police report obtained by the Sun Sentinel, he was wearing his uniform, and was armed with his service weapon on two of the occasions.

The police report indicated that Parrish committed the crimes by using the self-checkout kiosk, but he purposefully left the store without scanning some of the items.

“It was mostly food and household items such as paper towels, eggs, ramen noodles, frozen fish fillets, bacon, bleach, topsoil and a poinsettia,” spokesperson Dani Moschella said.

Since he was armed with his service weapon at the time of the crimes, doesn't that make the charge an automatic use of a firearm in the commission of a crime? That's a felony isn't it? Instead of petty theft, shouldn't he be charged with felony armed robbery?

Had the loss prevention associates confronted the deputy, and he pulled his weapon, a robbery would have occurred.

a lot of people would view a cop with a gun as threat of force in combination with theft. More people then less would be in fear of their lives at the thought of the consequences of calling out the cop for this theft. I would not assume that the guy would not pull out his gun an develop some trumped up charges to cover his crime.
