Florida minimum wage increases 12 cents in new year

Restaurant owner voices concern with system

http://www.wptv.com/news/region-s-palm-beach-county/florida-minimum-wage-increases-12-cents-in-new-year

The state's minimum wage is increasing 12 cents per hour with the new year. Tipped employees will now make $5.03 an hour. Non-tipped employees will start making $8.05 an hour.

Hungry diners pack into Scully's Restaurant in Boynton Beach on New Year's Day. Servers hustle to each table earning minimum wage, plus tips. It adds up to about $18 an hour, according to Kevin Scully, the owner. He's done the math. Giving servers a raise of 12 cents an hour will cost him $2,145 in 2015.

He has nothing against waiters, but said he'd rather give that money to employees in the kitchen, who make a few dollars above minimum wage, but less than the servers because they don't get tips.

This guy is unreal. 12 cents. He's complaining about 12 cents. Oh and there are some days that servers don't make $18 an hour - like the Summer in Florida. It's wrong that servers don't even make minimum wage and this guy is complaining about 12 cents!!!

How can one deal with a mind like this guy has? You really can't
A quick kick in the gonads and a punch to the face might get his attention but I doubt it would

I've met good ones who pay well, but there are some that are just the greediest and stingiest bastards I've ever met. I worked for one of them as a teenager and to this day I'm sickened that people can hold such awful attitudes.

Or who know their rights but are too intimidated to say anything for fear of retaliation, even with blatant things like clawing back tips or constant same-day scheduling.

I don't know a single person who's worked in that industry whose first few jobs didn't involve a whole hell of a lot of illegality like that.

They occasionally lobby to be allowed not to pay wait staff at all.

He was publicly complaining then about post-Hurricane Sandy upgrades to power poles...

FPL maintenance project could put a damper on a restaurant in Boynton Beach

Originally set for October, the project was postponed when local crews were needed immediately in the northeast.

"When Hurricane Sandy was threatening our service territory, we put all maintenance on hold and after the storm we sent 1000 workers to the Northeast to help with restoration," says Greg Brostowicz, a spokesperson for FPL.

Now Scully wants it postponed again - so his business doesn't go under.

"I care about my 20 employees; I have waitresses who work for tips and they're going to lose out," says Scully.

So back then his "concern" was all for his waitresses who work for tips. Now his "concern" is that his wait staff is too highly paid (because of said tips), and he shouldn't have to pay them 12 cents an hour more.

Also, the additional $2145 per year that he said this would cost him, divided by the 20 employees he says he has, means that his employees only work an average of 17-18 hours a week. At minimum wage (or in the case of the servers, $5.03 an hour, plus tips).

This guy is a whining cheapskate no matter how he slices it.

Maybe get a new giant pickup every 4-5 years instead of every 2-3. Or 1 fewer offshore fishing trip with his buddies a year.

I've been around these kind of people. Everything is the fruits of "their' labor, everyone else is a lazy parasite.

Scully repaired the building with financial assistance from the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency’s Commercial Façade Grant program, said Margee Walsh, CRA spokeswoman.

And admits: "We make our money in January, February and March, that is it. The rest of the year we tread water," says Scully.

Does pretty well, usually $20-25 an hour on average. I have a government job at $24.79 an hour and she takes home more than I do after I make my pension and investment plan contributions. I'm seriously thinking about getting a part-time job there for some extra cash.
