Just a note to acolytes and sycophants of the man. If you want your hero to be taken seriously, at least spell the man's name correctly.
Thanks!

(15,438 posts)I saw your post in another thread chided that one poster about at least getting the spelling of Russell Brand's name correctly and I chuckled behind my comp.
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)to learn the spelling of that person's name, I have to discount their support somewhat. I realize that some people don't consider such things as important. I blame texting and slackerish casual treatment of language, I guess. But, I simply can't take discussion seriously if it pays no attention to the standards of language. I'm betting that Russell Brand has never misspelled anything publicly in his life. He seems to be an educated man.
I chuckle, too, but it seriously bothers me that people who follow someone can't spell the person's freaking name.
But I'm old and don't count. I realize that.

(15,438 posts)I agree that those who wax poetically about someone yet can't be bothered to spell that person's name correctly, should be regarded with a jaundiced eye - especially when they're so argumentative for no apparent reason. It's as if they have this ginormous chip on their shoulder and are so focused on lashing out to get their pound of flesh that they can't be bothered with the details of the person they've taken upon themselves to "defend". Makes them and their "argument" appear disingenuous, doesn't it?

That is all."
The crazies took over from there, creating videos and detailed accounts of how we went from Hicks to Jones.

(15,558 posts)as an excuse to call people sycophants and acolytes is pure wisdom.

(146,287 posts)Now I'm a "nazi," too? Wonderful.
Do you know the difference between an acolyte and a sycophant? They're not synonyms, you know. However, most acolytes of someone take that person's name seriously. Sycophants can't be bothered, I suppose, though.
This has turned into a delightful conversation. Do go on. I'm very pleased to have such a devoted follower.

A - At least the snake was on his way to a gig

(45,319 posts)are not words generally used to identify those who might enjoy the musings of a comic. A sycophant does not merely fawn, but fawns for personal advantage. A acolyte is an assistant in religious rites. Do you have a link to support your assertion that spelling is taken seriously by acolytes? Between an acolyte and a sycophant, I'd say sycophants are more likely to be concerned with the spelling of their object's name, because sycophants seek favor via obsequious displays of loyalties and affections. A devotee will make obsequious displays of loyalties and affections as well, but they seek nothing from it but the grace of their beloved.
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)a political commentator and making pronouncements about politics. That puts him in a new category, which does support acolytes and sycophants. Do I have a link? No, I do not. This is my original thinking.
Russell Brand is not someone I would hold up as an example of anything, really. As an entertainer, I have not found him particularly entertaining. As a political thinker, I believe he needs to think harder about what he says. My post, though, addresses nothing about him, really. Some people appear to believe that his is a voice that should be heeded. My recommendation, in that case, is that his name be spelled correctly by people who have that belief.
Still, many prominent names are commonly misspelled. Our President's first name is often incorrectly spelled as "Barak" and his wife's name spelled as "Hilary." Since both names appear in print with considerable frequency, it seems careless and thoughtless to me to misspell their names.
It might seem to be a minor complaint, but I take such things seriously.

(45,319 posts)He's an entertainer. He's not the Prime Minister. Don't take him seriously. That is literally the exact opposite thing from what comics want people to do. Take him humorously, liberally, sincerely even, but seriously? Save that for actual politics.
It's really a dubious choice to latch on to the voting comments and decide that it fits with a liberal mind to hear some soundbite and then launch into diatribes against the cursed speaker. George Carlin said the exact same things about voting. Did he have 'acolytes'?
I think it's sort of right wingish to portray comics as having 'followers' and not simply an audience. I really do. Was George Carlin trying to build a movement, or was he doing Carlin material for a freaking living? To look at a clown, a performer while they are performing and see that as something in need of divisive political commentary is absurd.
Brand is sometimes wildly funny, he is extremely skilled with language and I like lots of his work. Most people on DU would like his UK shows very much. This is a man who does nothing but talk for a living, and DU has this one line out of all of it to talk about. That's all they know. It's very 'Bill O'Reilly reading rap lyrics' if you ask me.

(146,287 posts)The apostrophe is how many people indicate plural's, I believe, based on it's wide use everywhere. I see it constantly, and am considering making a change from my normal habit's.
How to make a letter of the alphabet plural has always confounded people. My preference is to do it the way I did. The preferences of others, however, might differ from that. It's one of the pressing question's of life.
My first editor told me once that misspelling a person's name in print is pretty much an unforgivable error. It offends the person and also those who read the article and know the proper spelling. She insisted that people's names be fact checked every time. If you think about it, that makes sense.
