Regarding the Dec. 21 editorial about reducing pension payments ("Cutting Pension Benefits Is Bad but Necessary"
: There have been more than 1,000 new trucking jobs in Des Moines over the past 20 years. I assume this is true across the country. If these jobs were union, the multi-employer pension plans would be working as designed and intended.
Throughout history there have been power swings back and forth between businesses and unions. Both have abused their power. The current laws favor businesses, contributing to income inequality. As union membership has decreased, so has the middle class.
In my deliveries as a union driver, I have met over 100 non-union drivers. I have met only two who did not want to be union. They all know they will be fired for signing a union vote card. I hope the pendulum swings back before we become a two-class society.
