When he heard that Stuart Scott passed on Sunday, Andy Hoffman felt sad. But he immediately thought of a favorite memory.

Andy and son Jack met the late ESPN anchor in July 2013, the day before the ESPY Awards show. The Hoffmans, of Atkinson, Nebraska, were checking into their hotel and the lobby was packed with all of the famous ESPN faces they recognized.

Finally, here came Scott, who, like Jack, was battling cancer. The two talked for almost half an hour, about sports, about chemotherapy, about stuff.

“The first thing Stuart said was he wanted a hug from Jack,” Andy told me on Monday. “He not only wanted to give Jack a hug, he wanted one back from him.
