The radical right will never give up the idea of making the US a theocracy. That fact that so many Americans are complacent and apathetic makes such a scary possibility possible. Radical religious ideas and policies are infiltrating the public forum more and more every day. Laws like religious freedom restoration would not have been possible a few years ago. Such laws are a dangerous to the public good and public order. Such laws are one symptom of the Dominionist cancer that is spreading unnoticed.
Now we face a tsunami of anti secular laws in many red states. These same conservative states are ready to unleash numerous attacks on women's reproductive rights. And they are still determined to turn back LGBT rights and will never rest until they succeed in putting gays and others back into the closet.
Right now the religious right is able to dictate public policy and controls the GOP in so many ways. And the present GOP generally supports the aims of the Dominionist movement. The GOP is willing to accept a Dominionist candidate to keep power. They need this radical base to succeed.

So what brings this up for you now?

(10,602 posts)I never thought I would see so much religion in the public forum. I remember the paranoia about Kennedy. Now it is replaced with acceptance of even radical religion in the public forum. The attack on reproductive rights and "conscience" laws would have never been possible in an earlier era. What I am seeing is hardly new. Radical religiosity has been growing for years. Only now it is more than obvious. They do not hide what they intend anymore.
There are so many references from prominent politicians about being on "God's" mission. Undercurrents that have been around since Reagan are now open and on the surface. I grew up in an era where religion was very separate from the public sector. The idea that churches should get tax money was simply unthinkable.
If you look at the make up of Congress today there are a large number of the religious nut cases in the institution. The last election brought into office legislators who are not qualified for their office. And they have a radical religious bent.

(6,476 posts)For all the same reasons. I remember too....and have been talking about my concerns since the 80's. They're on the move and too many scoff at the notion they could take over...I wish people would realize there is a dangerous enemy in our country and they aren't Muslims they're Dominionist
Christians. We need to push them back hard.
Thanks for your post.

(10,602 posts)A lot of radical religion movement began as far back as the days of "tent" religion. I remember seeing things about roaming "tent" preachers who spoke fire and brimstone going from small town to small town. In the 50's most of the activity seemed to be in the deep south. The movie Elmer Gantry was a good movie about such a movement.
I believe these people are as dangerous as any terrorist because they have the same agenda in the end. The most serious symptom of this movement is the broad and now very open and aggressive attacks on women's reproductive rights. And the attacks does not stop there either.
Ultimately the religious right is no different than the Puritans where religion was the main stay of society. Like radical Islam in that the populace would be expected to eat, sleep and live the religion 24/7. Missing church was a criminal offense.

(90,643 posts)I learned about the Dominionists/Christian Reconstructionists here over a decade ago, then did my own research. Right Wing Watch is a good website. What I discovered absolutely horrified me.
One of the key differences between Us and Them is having the long view. In my estimation Democrats/Progressives/Liberals/Lefties have the attention span of a gnat. The Dominionist leaders, on the other hand, have been working at this for at least 40 years, and have very long range goals and the means of pursuing them, from intensive propaganda to buying politicians.
Anyhow, I do appreciate this issue being resurrected here (so to speak ), as educating a new crop of DUers is always a good thing.
