From The Rude Pundit-In Brief: Conservatives Need to Be Careful How They Condemn the Paris Shooting

1/07/2015

Before you get all smug and superior about how you, a brave Christian conservative, would never be so savage as to want violence to be done to satirists, not like those fuckin' Moo-Slims who are just fuckin' animals who fuck animals or whatever the fuck you think, before you go down that road, you need to accept what exactly the French magazine Charlie Hebdo was publishing that so enraged a trio of gunmen that they shot and killed a dozen people at Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris today.

'Cause, see, this wasn't just Mohammed's face made into a bomb, like that Danish magazine published a few years ago. Oh, no, no, no. Charlie Hebdo went all out in degrading Islam, like South Park on meth. Ask yourself how you think some Christians would react if a newspaper that was available on the streets of major cities had a cartoon of Jesus Christ - you know him, right? - naked on all fours with his asshole facing the reader, his balls and dripping cock dangling. Or Jesus lying nude on the ground with a camera pointed at his butt while he says, "My ass? And you love it, my ass?" Because, see, that's how Charlie Hebdo portrayed Mohammed.

It's vicious, childish, and funny (in that "Well, they did like Jerry Lewis" sort of French way). But if you, fine imaginary Christian reader, are condemning Muslims for a violent reaction to the cartoons, then you are saying, in essence, that you are totally cool with the aforementioned images of Christ. And you are saying, "Go ahead, American cartoonists, draw Jesus's dong and Mary's leaky titties and poor Joseph jacking off in the corner. It's not a problem."

For the record, the Rude Pundit believes that freedom of expression and, indeed, freedom of the press trumps your right to live without being offended. Charlie Hebdo, Bill Maher, even Ann goddamn Coulter can say whatever the fuck they want. If you disagree, you can go fuck yourself with a torah until you splooge on a statue of Shiva and wipe it up with an American flag. Or maybe offer a counterargument where the point isn't made with a gun, unlike the three shooting dickheads in Paris who just made life a little harder for Muslims in the West.

Warning: NSFW cartoon if you click on the link.

WASHINGTON—Following the publication of the image above, in which the most cherished figures from multiple religious faiths were depicted engaging in a lascivious sex act of considerable depravity, no one was murdered, beaten, or had their lives threatened, sources reported Thursday. The image of the Hebrew prophet Moses high-fiving Jesus Christ as both are having their erect penises vigorously masturbated by Ganesha, all while the Hindu deity anally penetrates Buddha with his fist, reportedly went online at 6:45 p.m. EDT, after which not a single bomb threat was made against the organization responsible, nor did the person who created the cartoon go home fearing for his life in any way. Though some members of the Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist faiths were reportedly offended by the image, sources confirmed that upon seeing it, they simply shook their heads, rolled their eyes, and continued on with their day.

NSFW warning: the linked cartoon includes several penises and may be highly offensive to followers of the religions mentioned.

Also, Christian reactions to "Piss Christ" were certainly...... milder.

From the South Park episode "Cartoon Wars", the same episode which Comedy Central censored for nothing worse than a scene of Muhammad handing a helmet to Peter Griffin:

Don't recall any death threats over this, strangely enough.

You want the real story, you only have to read the Guardian on line, why do you think Merkel is meeting with Cameron today. Mondays are protest day in Germany and Austria, now we are seeing what is and can happen when hate takes over. Not pretty.

mention entire novels, plays, films, Broadway musicals that depict the Christ and Christian practices in all sorts of profane or satirical or even intentionally heretical ways. And there is a huge gap between 'not a problem' and 'mass murder'. Huge.
To be fair, the film 'The Last Temptation of Christ' angered conservative Christians who did firebomb a theater over it, in Paris. Not in the US. In France. Here they just whined about it. Rudy whined about that painting of Mary he found offensive, they all whined about 'Piss Christ' but still can't tell you what that work of art was.
But whining and opening fire are really different things. They have a First Amendment right to whine.

even the reputable Letterman has had Jesus jokes on especialy in the top 10..

The comedy channel has tons of it, and South Park (my favorite way of keeping up with the news) has Jesus walking around with the kids all the time...

Letterman hasn't lost any sponsors over it, and I doubt that South Park has either. George Carlin made a living of it.

History 2 tells how the Christmas story is a fabrication, and CNN is coming up next week, I think, with a Jesus feature - so far, all they've said about it is that it includes forgeries. The gospels say so little about Jesus that most people don't know that they been redacted, wallpapered over, by the popes over the last 2 millennium... and lightening hasn't struck yet.

'Cause see, in my world there's this enormous range of interim reactions. As a matter of fact, if a bunch of Christians ran out and murdered Andres Serrano and anyone who happened to be in his vicinity in reaction to the Piss Christ exhibit, I must have missed the news stories about it, but I heard plenty about how deeply offended many were by that.

Personally, and in the interest of fully disclosure, I do happen to be a Christian, I've experienced any number of degrees of anger in response to incidents of ridicule of my religious beliefs, but I've never come close to violence. And neither has any other Christian that I know.

Charlie Hebdo has ridiculed every religion in the past, as have other satirical publications. So far, nobody has shot the place up over that. The Rude Pundit missed out on his research this time.

When someone does sacrilegious satire on Christianity, the response is just the usual death threats from people who haven't left their basements in years. The same folks send out death threats for everything, but they rarely act at all, no matter what.

Since the TRP makes a point of offending people in his commentary, doesn't he get the point of offensive satire? Or maybe he thinks he's the arbiter of just wear the line of acceptability is?
