European Leaders Line Up to Attend Unity Rally
Leaders in Europe have been announcing their plans to attend a “unity rally” planned in Paris for Sunday to show national resolve after this week’s bloodshed.
The list now includes Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi of Italy and the European Union president, Donald Tusk.
No word has yet emerged on whether any American officials would attend, though Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. was planning to be in Paris on Sunday for terrorism-related talks.
The rally has been a source of tension in domestic political circles, with disagreement over whether the far-right National Front should be invited. Marine Le Pen, the group’s leader, called the event “a pathetic political maneuver.”
