Such an extraodinary place! If we must be freezing, let's take it to someplace isolated and so utterly beautiful and make music.

WOW That first one, the track thru such thick ice. The sounds are wonderful. I had no idea this was possible. Bare hands, ouch! So joyous. Thank you for the post.

(11,833 posts)I love how you welcome newer people here. Hope you're enjoying a wonderful new year. 2015 is gonna be good! Well, not always. But I have optimism and appreciate yours as well.
And hi to all reading this!

Just today, that thread!
Ironically, today also, I've thought, once again (heck, it's usually on a daily basis!) of another DUer who no longer posts. I suspect it wasn't voluntary but don't know, really. Newyawker99. ALWAYS there welcoming somebody with a low post count since that usually, but not always, meant they were fairly recent arrivals. Newyawker99 invariably popped up with a welcome post - like the Official Greeter of DU. That was so nice to have, and nice to see. Just something nice and warm at the front door, y'know? Especially since there may be a fist-fight starting in the front room and a LOUD argument booming forth from back in the kitchen.
I always noticed that and appreciated it, having been on the receiving end of it when I first started here. Just seemed like a good tradition to assist with, in a small way, since I've been noticing newyawker99's absence for awhile. Seems to me people need to feel welcome here, especially if their low post count is because they just recently discovered this place. I remember when I first started here, shortly after Selection 2000, it felt like I was jumping into a new pool that did not have a shallow end. It was all deep and immediate, and you better be able to swim in order to be able to splash around in it. Of course, you take a deep breath, plunge in, and take your chances and try to do your best. Some are strong and gutsy and forge directly ahead. But for others it might be a somewhat daunting experience (as it was for me), and similarly, if you've lurked for awhile but then finally decided to post something, as you rarely otherwise do.
But I miss newyawker99's posts and jolly welcomes. Hope I spelled that correctly - it's been so long.
Dammit.

(17,505 posts)I saw pics of these sculptures by an artist (a woman if I remember correctly) who would fill a large shallow frame (outdoors of course) with water and then float a length of brightly dyed silk in it. Of course the fabric would ripple and bends and scrunch up. When the water froze encasing the fabric in a large thin sheet of ice, she would set it upright (they were very tall) so light could shine through the ice and fabric. They were beautiful. Of course they melt after a while...
I can't remember her name, but did some searches to see if I could find them, but any search with "frozen" in it immediately takes you to the Disney animated film
