Even cops may not be safe from other cops. This was the second friendly fire incident.

Albuquerque, NM Albuquerque Police Departments five months without a shooting has come to an end as an Albuquerque police officer remains in critical condition after being shot by a fellow officer on Friday.
The unnamed officer was shot while undercover during a drug operation to bust two men for $60 worth of meth. Another officer sustained minor injuries, but information on how has not been released.

This trigger happy officer, who opened fire and shot someone who posed no danger to them, multiple times, is devastated according to Police Chief Gorden Eden. The lieutenant is currently on administrative leave and getting support through the departments counseling services.
Police even went so far as to confiscate a witnesss cell phone after he had recorded some of the incident.
While brutality is clearly a nationwide issue, the APD has claimed some major notoriety for their badge abuse. Since 2010, the department has had 41 officer involved shootings, 27 of which were fatal.

(9,951 posts)would he be devastated if it had been Joe citizen? If it had been a black citizen?

(22,165 posts)I am asking, the story did not indicate race of the undercover cops.

(22,165 posts)... in new York admitted a "certain amount of caution" around other police officers when they were not in uniform.
either way this horrifically highlights the use of excessive force and deadly force by the police .... regardless of the race of the injured cop hoping beyond hope they recover (and sue the hell out of the PD and city)

(19,558 posts)He'd be making no comments, while his superiors worked at cleaning up his mess. He'd know he had a chance, a good one, of getting off on the charges. Instead he shot one of his own while they were undercover, he's in deep and he knows it. I bet he's devastated alright.

(12,293 posts)I hope for a speedy recovery for the officer shot. When these thing happened to your own, it then becomes clear that aggressive, combat ready policeman are not serving the community.

(19,288 posts)How he's devastated because it was another cop and not because it was an attempt at an extra judicial execution.

(111,175 posts)it looks like a drug sting gone very wrong. The cop who was shot was deep undercover.
The local cops have done a lot of attitude changing and priority shifting since this time last year, thanks to the Feds coming down hard on them.
Thanks to the attitude shift, people are now supporting the family of the injured cop, still in critical condition. That wouldn't have happened six months ago.
The NYPD should pay attention to this.
ETA: The local cops are not handling their own investigation.

(31,508 posts)Don't get me wrong, I hate meth. I've seen meth ruin too many lives, but this type of response for minor drug sales or possession is over the top.

(1,815 posts)they've been killing civilians for more than 20 years. Now maybe they'll give us a break. In Albuquerque the cops are cowboys and the populace is vermin that must be culled.
