Can Jeb Bush Defy the Tea Party and Win?
Can Jeb Bush win the Republican presidential nomination while defying the most ideologically committed wing of his party? ... Bush has decided to confront his partys right wing on issues of immigration, the Common Core and same-sex marriage.
Stan Greenberg, a Democratic strategist who agrees with Garin, contended in an interview that immigration has become the dominant issue for a majority of Republican primary voters. This will make it difficult for Bush if the nomination fight turns into a two-person contest between Bush and an anti-immigration candidate.
Bush has also defied the Tea Party wing of his party on education policy. He has remained a steadfast supporter of national education testing standards under the Common Core program, despite growing, and often intense, opposition from the right.
Recently, however, Bush has demonstrated a notable open-mindedness on social and cultural issues a posture, generally speaking, which is anathema to the Tea Party, but advantageous in a general election.

Jeb is obviously running. As the article points out both McCain and Romney had to drop pro-immigration positions during their primaries when their base has a disproportionate influence. It will be interesting to see if Jeb's "moderate" positions survive an encounter with tea party activists during the primaries.

(20,829 posts)as people point out his main problem is likely to be similar to the last go around with so many grifters in the race. It will be hard to pick a candidate because with so many people it will be hard to tell people who to chose. The thought is the king makers will keep the field clean this go around, but I'll believe it when I see it.
