I automatically think of Rupert Murdock.
Rupert Murdock was born in Australia, but in the 80s decided he wanted to buy a news station in the United States. Unfortunately for him, U.S. law required one had to be a U.S. citizen to do so. No problem -- Rupert Murdock had a friend in a very high place. That friend's name was Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan expedited Murdock's American citizenship application, and enabled Murdock's dream to control a portion of the news broadcast within the United States to become a reality.
Sometimes when one does a favor for a friend, reciprocity comes into play. I am attaching a link which describes Murdock's role in participating in a "Cold-War style propaganda" program. Read the entire article when you have a chance because it will make one's hair stand on end to learn all in one place exactly how much influence this conservative Australian has had in defining what many Americans believe. Of course, many DU'ers know much of this information but perhaps some of the younger members are unaware.
Also, when you read of Murdock's personal perspectives on different issues, you will recognize those perspectives in many of today's Republican politicians. It is good to know where some of this crap originated and how it gets spread around....

The Reagan administration pulled right-wing media executives Rupert Murdoch and Richard Mellon Scaife into a CIA-organized perception management operation which aimed Cold War-style propaganda at the American people in the 1980s, according to declassified U.S. government records.
This example of how a former conservative United States President used his position to usher into the United States' broadcasting arena someone like Rupert Murdock and the catastrophic influence Murdock has had on news broadcast to the American people over the decades makes President Barack Obama's Executive Orders look mellow, if only because he has done everything in the light of day for the public to see.
And then of course there were 18 immigrations reforms by recent Republican Presidents, none of which were power grabs simply because none of those Presidents were born in Kenya and all were Republicans. See the difference?

So the next time you hear the Republicans complain about President Obama's power grabs on immigration reform, think of Ronald Reagan and Rupert Murdock. No one was throwing the impeachment javelin at Reagan because the Republicans were too busy worshiping him.
If you are reading this thread at this late hour, please give it a kick for the morning crowd.

(753 posts)At my welding shop, last year we hired 3 young hispanic guys who received DACA. They knew welding, and through use they became certified. And I'm telling you everyone of them said similar things.
I feel American. I can drive a car without worry. I can take care of my family. When my friends invite me somewhere I don't have to say no because I might get asked for ID.
And the effort to do so is for all the wrong reasons. It is a good thing to try and point out the hypocrisy when we can though.
Thanks for posting on my thread.

(51,076 posts)it was chuck schumer who stuck a rider on an unrelated bill to be voted on the next morning in the wee hours that gave murdock the papers to own a news organization. I remember it when it happened but my search skills are sorely in need so I've not been able to confirm this. If anyone remembers please fill in the blanks
Who knows it may have been a dream I had but I don't think it was
I've been suspicious of Chuck ever since
I'm not saying it was chuckie and not reagan rather that the trail that you've taken us on passed by schumer on the way, that he had a hand in this too.

(9,314 posts)that is not surprising. So I assume your memory is probably correct. I did find a site which lists Rupert Murdock's campaign contributions. The article is from 2011, and I would like to say upfront I am not familiar with this website. But here are a couple of paragraphs I am quoting because I was kind of surprised at some of the names on there (including my own representative -- Steny Hoyer!):
http://www.wrmea.org/2011-september-october/rupert-murdoch-s-news-corp.-pac-hedges-its-party-bets-but-favors-zionists.html
The most regular recipient of Murdoch's PAC contributions might be Rep. Howard "Even before I was a Democrat, I was a Zionist" Berman, formerly the chair and now the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Not only has Berman been a recipient in every election year except 2002, in 2010 he received the maximum contribution of $10,000 (as did fellow Zionist Sen. Charles Schumer [D-NY]). Since 1998 Berman has received a total of $28,500 from Murdoch's PAC.
Other frequent recipients over the yearsfor all of whom Israel is a top priorityinclude Berman's Democratic California neighbors Reps. Brad Sherman, Adam Schiff and Jane Harman (the latter having recently decamped to head the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC). Nor has the House leadership been neglected: Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer can count on Murdoch's PAC, which in 2010 also gave $6,700 to soon-to-be House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and $10,000 to soon-to-be former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). The Senate leadership did not fare quite so well, with Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who was in a very tight race, receiving a mere $1,000 and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was not even up for re-election in 2010, receiving $5,000.
So at least we learned that Schumer in 2011 received the maximum allowable contribution of $10,000 from Murdoch's PAC and that some of the other beneficiaries listed are eyebrow raising.... In 2010, Nancy Pelosi received $10,000!

Its dirty business however one wants to look at it. Been bad for our country and everyone in it
We have to get bribery out of our government and put an end to corporate owned media or we loose big time. We're loosing right now as we go through our day
I say bribery but what else can we call it? What else is it?
