FBI should have protected MLK, not turned him into a target.

Last edited Sat Jan 17, 2015, 07:44 PM - Edit history (1)

Dr. Martin Luther King, speaking at University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium in 1962.

Instead, the FBI and US Army intelligence and who knows what-all did all they could to spy on Dr. King. FBI Director J Edgar Hoover even used his office to encourage the man to take his own life.

FBI tracked King's every move

* FBI memo called King the "most dangerous ... effective Negro leader" in U.S.
* Hidden wiretaps turned up no Communist Party ties, just extramarital affairs
* J. Edgar Hoover's contempt for MLK's private behavior shows in private memos

By Jen Christensen
CNN, Dec. 29, 2008

EXCERPT...

Hoover's contempt for King's private behavior is clear in the memos he kept in his personal files. His scrawl across the bottom of positive news stories about King's success dripped with loathing.

On a story about King receiving the St. Francis peace medal from the Catholic Church, he wrote "this is disgusting." On the story "King, Pope to Talk on Race," he scribbled "astounding." On a story about King's meeting with the pope, "I am amazed that the Pope gave an audience to such a degenerate." On a story about King being the heavy favorite to win the Nobel Prize, he wrote "King could well qualify for the 'top alley cat' prize!"

When King learned he would be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the FBI decided to take its harassment of King one step further, sending him an insulting and threatening note anonymously. A draft was found in the FBI files years later. In it the FBI wrote, "You are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that." The letter went on to say, "The American public ... will know you for what you are -- an evil, abnormal beast," and "Satan could not do more."

The letter's threat was ominous, if not specific: "King you are done." Some have theorized the intent of the letter was to drive King to commit suicide in order to avoid personal embarrassment. "King, there is only one thing left for you to do," the letter concluded. "You know what it is ... You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation."

Today is the 86th anniversary of Dr. King's birth. He was only 39 when gunned down in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. King was in that community to express solidarity with the city's striking sanitation workers. He believed all men were equal under the law, no matter their race, heritage, religion, politics, or wealth.

After a visit more than 52 years ago, unexpected treasures from a place that knows how to celebrate the life of a remarkable American, the University of Michigan:

“I think we could find out as much as we can about (the photos) and have a permanent exhibition,” David Erdody, a digital curator at the U-M Bentley Historical Library, said. “Martin Luther King is the single person this University recognizes the most as an individual, more than any other person. … Now that we know that he’s here and the evidence is just so stunningly beautiful, I’ll let other (University) people decide what to do with them.”

2. President Kennedy didn't think the government capable of such actions.

Otherwise, I believe he would have ordered federal protection of Dr. King. Instead, he did what the FBI told him was good for the country and wiretapped him.

Thanks to my kind and good friends on DU, I know that President Kennedy was approached by J Edgar Hoover who reported Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was taking counsel and money from Stanley Levison, alleged to have once been a member or follower of the Communist Party USA, a group then committed to the overthrow of the US Government. So, Hoover approached RFK and JFK for authorization to wiretap Dr. King.

The Kennedys went along and even shared some of the "pillow talk" from the take with members of their family.

What I can't find record of is whether JFK knew the CIA had hired the Mafia to assassinate, that is, murder, Fidel Castro. We do know that program was started by Allen Dulles and Richard Nixon under President Eisenhower's authority in 1960.

While there is much disinformation in the public record, going from memory, almost all of which is disinformation that can be traced back to Dulles, Richard Helms or James Angleton. Something that is missing from the public record: any evidence JFK knew CIA was doing that kind of "work."

3. J Edgar was far too twisted of an individual to give a shit about the people of this country.

HE and Glenn Beck would have been great friends. No doubt Nixon an Hoover loved to plot against POC (probably all the way up to his death).

The man totally destroyed the reputation he was so determined to build. Thankfully the FBI is not still someones own personal secret police force. Hoover was as close to a tyrant as we will ever get, hopefully.

5. Hoover was unqualified to be in law enforcement, he let his political views rule the FBI.
Thu Jan 15, 2015, 06:35 PM
Jan 2015

He hated liberals with a passion and decided very early on to fuck the law and just do whatever the hell he wanted to. Amazing that the FBI survived his tyrannical mindset.

The Palmer Raids.

"As Attorney General Palmer struggled with exhaustion and devoted all his energies to the United Mine Workers coal strike in November and December of 1919,[12] Hoover organized the next raids. He successfully persuaded the Department of Labor to ease its insistence on promptly alerting those arrested of their right to an attorney. Instead Labor issued instructions that its representatives could wait until after the case against the defendant was established, "in order to protect government interests."[13] Less openly, Hoover decided to interpret Labor’s agreement to act against the Communist Party to include a different organization, the Communist Labor Party. Finally, despite the fact that Secretary of Labor William B. Wilson insisted that more than membership in an organization was required for a warrant, Hoover worked with more compliant Labor officials and overwhelmed Labor staff to get the warrants he wanted. Justice Department officials, including Palmer and Hoover, later claimed ignorance of such details.[14]

The Justice Department launched a series of raids on January 2, 1920 with follow up operations over the next few days. Smaller raids extended over the next 6 weeks. At least 3000 were arrested, and many others were held for various lengths of time. The entire enterprise replicated the November action on a larger scale, including arrests and seizures without search warrants, as well as detention in overcrowded and unsanitary holding facilities. Hoover later admitted "clear cases of brutality."[15] The raids covered more than 30 cities and towns in 23 states, but those west of the Mississippi and south of the Ohio were "publicity gestures" designed to make the effort appear nationwide in scope.[16] Because the raids targeted entire organizations, agents arrested everyone found in organization meeting halls, not only arresting non-radical organization members but also visitors who did not belong to a target organization, and sometimes American citizens not eligible for arrest and deportation. [17]

The Department of Justice at one point claimed to have taken possession of several bombs, but after a few iron balls were displayed to the press they were never mentioned again. All the raids netted a total of just four ordinary pistols.[18]"

Hoover is one of the reasons law enforcement is so fucked up in this country imo.

8. Agree completely. Corrupt. And he was in charge of ''investigating'' the JFK assassination.
Thu Jan 15, 2015, 10:37 PM
Jan 2015

John Edgar Hoover not only failed the Constitution and People with his "investigation" of the assassination of President Kennedy, Hoover obstructed justice, including the destruction of at least some evidence directly pertaining to Lee Harvey Oswald.

FBI Special Agent James HOSTY destroyed evidence: a ''threatening'' note from Oswald.

A couple of weeks before the assassination, SA Hosty paid a visit to Marina Oswald's residence at the home of Ruth Paine. Hosty was looking for Lee Harvey Oswald, who was not home. Oswald later found out about the visit and stopped by the Dallas FBI office and dropped off a note addressed to Hosty. Reports conflict whether he was upset or calm that day, but the note indicated Oswald threatened to "blow up the FBI building" in the words of the secretary who received the note in an unsealed envelope and read it.

Hosty and the FBI never admitted the note's existence until 1975 when the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) uncovered the criminality in its investigations. Hosty said the note was not a threat and, therefore, not material to the case. Investigators believe Dallas SAC Gordon Shanklin ordered the note destroyed on direct orders from FBI Director J Edgar Hoover, a couple of hours after Oswald's own assassination while in police custody.

The note was never mentioned to the Warren Commission.

Destroying evidence is obstruction of justice.

He knew what kind of society he wanted. Besides the FBI, the only other good thing I can say about the man is at least he hated McCarthy (but of course used him then discarded him). No government oversight appealed to him. Poppy liked it.

Poppy found certain things I call odd, funny.

13. PERSONAL ATTENTION TO ALL FBI OFFICES (COINTELPRO from J EDGAR HOOVER)

SAC, Albany August 25, 1967

PERSONAL ATTENTION TO ALL OFFICES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[From] Director, FBI
COUNTERINTELLIGENCE PROGRAM
BLACK NATIONALIST - HATE GROUPS
INTERNAL SECURITY
(...) The purpose of this new counterintelligence endeavor is to
expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or OTHERWISE NEUTRALIZE (emphasis
added) the activities of black nationalist hate-type organizations and
groupings, their leadership, spokesmen, membership, and supporters, and
to counter their propensity for violence and civil disorder. The activities
of all such groups of intelligence interest to the Bureau must be followed
on a continuous basis so we will be in a position to promptly take advantage
of all opportunities for counterintelligence and inspire action in instances
where circumstances warrant. The pernicious background of such groups,
their duplicity, and devious maneuvers must be exposed to public scrutiny
where such publicity will have a neautralizing effect. Efforts of the
various groups to consolidate their forces or to recruit new or youthful
adherents must be frustrated. NO OPPORTUNITY SHOULD BE MISSED TO
EXPLOIT THROUGH COUNTERINTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUES THE ORGANIZATIONAL AND
PERSONAL CONFLICTS OF THE LEADERSHIPS OF THE GROUPS AND WHERE POSSIBLE AN
EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE TO CAPITALIZE UPON EXISTING CONFLICTS BETWEEN COMPETING
BLACK NATIONALIST ORGANIZATIONS.
(emphasis added) When an opportunity is
apparent to disrupt or NEUTRALIZE (emphasis added) black nationalist, hate-
type organizations through the cooperation of established local news media
contacts or through such contact with sources available to the Seat of
Government [Hoover's office]*, in every instance careful attention must be
given to the proposal to insure the targetted group is disrupted, ridiculed,
or discredited through the publicity and not merely publicized...
You are also cautioned that the nature of this new endeavor is such
that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE EXISTENCE OF THE PROGRAM BE MADE
KNOWN OUTSIDE THE BUREAU
(emphasis added) and appropriate within-office
security should be afforded to sensitive operations and techniques considered
under the program.
No counterintelligence action under this program may be initiated
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
by the field without specific prior Bureau authorization.
(Emphasis in orig.)

* [EDITOR'S NOTE: "Seat of Government" (SOG) is an official designation
created by J. Edgar Hoover to refer to his own office. Hoover was director
of the FBI for some 40 years, even receiving a special exemption from
compulsory retirement by President Ford. The "SOG" appelation is
indicative of his egotistical view of his power, which saw presidents come
and go.]

COUNTERINTELLIGENCE PROGRAM
BLACK NATIONALIST - HATE GROUPS
RACIAL INTELLIGENCE
3/4/68

[...]

GOALS
~~~~~
For maximum effectiveness of the Counterintelligence Program, and
to prevent wasted effort, long-range goals are being set.
1. Prevent the COALITION of militant black nationalist groups. In
unity there is strength; a truism that is no less valid for all its
triteness. An effective coalition of black nationalist groups might be the
first step toward a real "Mau Mau" [Black revolutionary army] in America,
the beginning of a true black revolution.
2. Prevent the RISE OF A "MESSIAH" who could unify, and
electrify, the militant black nationalist movement.
Malcolm X might have
been such a "messiah;" he is the martyr of the movement today. Martin
Luther King, Stokely Carmichael and Elijah Muhammed all aspire to this
position. Elijah Muhammed is less of a threat because of his age. King
could be a very real contender for this position should he abandon his
supposed "obedience" to "white, liberal doctrines" (nonviolence) and embrace
black nationalism. Carmichael has the necessary charisma to be a real
threat in this way.
3. Prevent VIOLENCE on the part of black nationalist groups. This
is of primary importance, and is, of course, a goal of our investigative
activity; it should also be a goal of the Counterintelligence Program to
pinpoint potential troublemakers and neutralize them before they
exercise their potential for violence.
4. Prevent militant black nationalist groups and leaders from
gaining RESPECTABILITY, by discrediting them to three separate segments of
the community.
The goal of discrediting black nationalists must be handled
tactically in three ways. You must discredit those groups and individuals
to, first, the responsible Negro community. Second, they must be
discredited to the white community, both the responsible community and to
"liberals" who have vestiges of sympathy for militant black nationalist
[sic] simply because they are Negroes. Third, these groups must be
discredited in the eyes of Negro radicals, the followers of the movement.
This last area requires entirely different tactics from the first two.
Publicity about violent tendencies and radical statements merely enhances
black nationalists to the last group; it adds "respectability" in a different
way.
5. A final goal should be to prevent the long-range GROWTH of
militant black organizations, especially among youth.
Specific tactics to
prevent these groups from converting young people must be developed. [...]
TARGETS
~~~~~~~

Primary targets of the Counterintelligence Program, Black
Nationalist-Hate Groups, should be the most violent and radical groups and
their leaders. We should emphasize those leaders and organizations that
are nationwide in scope and are most capable of disrupting this country.
These targets, members, and followers of the:

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)
Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM)
NATION OF ISLAM (NOI) (emphasis added)

Offices handling these cases and those of Stokely Carmichael of
SNCC, H. Rap Brown of SNCC, Martin Luther King of SCLC, Maxwell Stanford of
RAM, and Elijah Muhammed of NOI, should be alert for counterintelligence
suggestions. (...)
