Americans are now more concerned about terrorism than the economy (we are a nation of pantshitters)

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/obama-economy-not-biggest-priority-pew

The economy is not the top priority for Americans heading into 2015, the Pew Research Center reported Thursday, the first time that another issue has been at the top of the public mind under President Barack Obama.

Terrorism has eclipsed the economy as the biggest issue for Americans, the group's annual survey of the public's policy priorities found, being named by 76 percent of Americans as a top priority for Obama and Congress.

The economy was pegged by 75 percent -- which is still a big number, but it represented a 11-point drop from 2013. Likewise, the job situation was picked by 67 percent, the third priority behind the economy and terrorism, but it has also fallen by 12 points in the last two years.

------------------------------

This is ridiculous.

How fucking dumb is this country?

What are the odds that you will die in a terrorist attack?

Virtually zero.

Look at it this way, the economy has improved so much in folks minds, the fear of medical bill bankruptcy and losing your job has receded so much, and now that Fearbola is passé, now folks are free to make terrorism their fear du jour?

I don't have a link, it was hours ago and I'm posting from my phone.

On edit: I do recall the numbers being annual odds, not lifetime. The breakdown was that post 9/11 we have been averaging about 16 American deaths per year. It broke down each incident year by year since 2001.

the 24 hour "Be afraid - be deathly afraid" channel reaps its rewards after years of making people be afraid of their own shadows. "Terra"- check. "Ebola" - check. "The Muslin in the White House" check. "Furriners" - check. "Black or brown folk" - check. They're a one trick pony.

Manufacturing consent.

Modern MSM = agenda driven corporate propaganda. The Koch's and the authoritarians in our government probably have thousands of misinformation psy-ops nobel prize winning people working 24/7 to manufacture what they want us to think.

"Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe." - Frank Zappa

Our Oligarch's really know how to crank the average American fear level up to 11. And all this fear mongering is done because it serves their ends, which I guess is pretty much for all of us to say "To hell with all those Constitutional Rights we fought world wars to preserve, just please please please don't let all the muzzies kill my whole family!"

Robert Crumb nailed it an interview responding to the attack on Charlie Hebdo :

You don’t have journalists over there anymore, what they have is public relations people. That’s what they have over in America now. Two-hundred and fifty thousand people in public relations. And a dwindling number of actual reporters and journalists.

Thu Jan 15, 2015, 08:25 PM

The United States as we know it "needs" terrorism. Military spending has always been the Keynesianism of the right. A large percentage of the nation's physicists and other high-tech professionals work in the military-industrial complex sector. It's a great way to get the public to spend on scientific innovation, but to receive little of the benefits -- military contractors are private companies.

It takes a whole lot of fancy ideology to obscure the basic workings of the system.

Terrorism *is* the economy.
